The benzenetetrols, -pentol, and -hexol do not have trivial names, except for 1,2,3,4-benzenetetrol [642-96-6] which was named apionol in some of the older hterature. The other two benzenetetrol isomers are 1,2,3,5- [634-94-6] and 1,2,4,5-benzenetetrol [636-32-8]. [Pg.375]

Success finally resulted when the inosose ether (20) was converted to its ethylene mercaptal. The crude mercaptal was reduced with nickel, and the crude pentol pentamethyl ether cleaved in the usual manner. [Pg.54]

Pseudo-/ -DL-gi Zopyranose triacetate (36) was prepared by hydroxyla-tion of the enetriol triacetate (32) and converted to the corresponding pentol and pentaacetate. The intermediate 32 was obtained by Diels-Alder reaction (200°C., two days) of rans/ rans-l,4-diacetoxy-l,3-buta-diene with allyl acetate. The double bond was surprisingly inert to the usual additive reagents and not detectable by infrared spectroscopy because of near-symmetry, but it did react with tert-butyl hydroxperoxide to give 36 in about 30% yield (27). [Pg.61]

No hypotheses can be advanced for the sequences involved in the oxidation of cyclohexanepentols which react even more slowly with periodate than does (+)-quercitol. For instance, when the all-trans l 3, 5/2, 4-cyclohexanepentol (33) is oxidized (Figure 6), production of malonaldehyde starts very early and the time curve of periodate reduction indicates a very complex reaction. Nor is it possible to analyze satisfactorily the curves obtained with (1 l)-1, 2, 4/3, 5-cyclohexane-pentol (34) or with dl-1, 2, 3, 4/5-cyclohexanepentol (35) [this is the configuration predicted for the (1 D)-entantiomorph (41)]. [Pg.124]

Tetrodotoxin, an extremely poisonous heterocycle present in Japanese puffer fish (various species of Spheroides), exerts its action by blocking the sodium ion channels in the peripheral nervous system. Chemically it has an adamantane-like structure, namely octahydro-12 - (hydroxymethyl) - 2 - imino-5,7,9,1 Oa-dimethano- 10aH-[ 1,3] -dioxo-cino-[6,5-d]pyrimidine-4,7,10,11,12-pentol. Some of these agents are particularly useful in ophthalmology included in this category are homatropine hydrobromide (Isopto homatropine) (a semisynthetic derivative of atropine) cyclo-pentolate hydrochloride (Cyclogyl), and tropicamide (Mydriacyl). These agents are preferred to atropine or scopolamine because of their shorter duration of action. [Pg.208]
