Some of these agents are particularly useful in ophthalmology included in this category are homatropine hydrobromide (Isopto homatropine) (a semisynthetic derivative of atropine) cyclo-pentolate hydrochloride (Cyclogyl), and tropicamide (Mydriacyl). These agents are preferred to atropine or scopolamine because of their shorter duration of action. 

Tropicamide (Mydriacyl) and cyclopentolate (Myd-rilate) are useful (as 0.5% or 1% solutions) for mydriasis and cycloplegia. They are quicker and shorter-acting than homatropine. Both cause mydriasis in 10-20 min and cycloplegia shortly after. The duration of action is 4-12 h.

The eyes of all rats were examined by a Fison s indirect ophthalmoscope after pupillary dilatation with 0.5% tropicamide (Mydriacyl, Alcon Laboratories, Watford, Herts, UK) at the following times for study 1 all rats predose, weeks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10, 12 and 14 rats on recovery phase weeks 15, 17, 18, 20, 21 and for study 2 daily for the first week of dosing and thereafter at regular intervals and at least once per week.
