PENTANE, SEPARATION

However, for the past 30 years fractional separation has been the basis for most asphalt composition analysis (Fig. 10). The separation methods that have been used divide asphalt into operationally defined fractions. Four types of asphalt separation procedures are now in use ( /) chemical precipitation in which / -pentane separation of asphaltenes is foUowed by chemical precipitation of other fractions with sulfuric acid of increasing concentration (ASTM D2006) (2) solvent fractionation separation of an "asphaltene" fraction by the use of 1-butanol foUowed by dissolution of the 1-butanol solubles in... [Pg.366]

ZeoHte/polymer mixed-matrix membranes have been studied for a number of gas separations such as separation of N2 from air [37, 73, 75, 81, 84, 85], H2 and CO2 removal from natural gas [51, 54, 69, 81, 86-88], CO2 removal from N2 [74], n-pentane/i-pentane separation ]89] and separation of H2 from CO2 [65]. But a majority of the mixed-matrix membranes that have been evaluated for gas separations are mixed-matrix dense films. [Pg.347]

Rubbery polymer, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), was used as the polymer matrix to prepare zeolite/PDMS mixed-matrix membranes [82, 89]. This type of mixed-matrix membrane, however, did not exhibit improved selectivity for n-pentane/i-pentane separation relative to the neat PDMS membrane. [Pg.347]

We use rigorous simulation to determine feasible separations using water as a solvent. For a theoretical ten-stage liquid/liquid extraction process, we find that rather little water is needed to recover virtually all methanol from the pentane. At higher solvent flowrates the water-rich extract contains more and more acetone, but it cannot produce a complete separation of acetone and pentane. Thus, we select the solvent flow at which the methanol-pentane separation is sufficiently sharp. Figure 35 gives the separation selected. [Pg.124]

In this case, a preliminary separation will have taken place either in the plant by stabilization, or by the chromatograph which will have had a prefractionating column. This column will isolate the components having boiling points higher than pentane, allowing only the noncondensable hydrocarbons and a fraction of the pentanes to pass through to the analytical column. [Pg.71]

Deasphalting is a liquid-liquid separation operation that extracts the last of the easily convertible hydrocarbons from the vacuum residue. Solvents enipl ec) are light paraffins propane, butane, and pentane. The yimd In deasphalted oil increases with the molecular weight of the solvent, but its quality decreases. 5 uxct... [Pg.368]

Hots 4. In principle diethyl ether can be used, but with pentane a faster separation of the layers is effected. [Pg.203]

Samples and calibration standards are prepared for analysis using a 10-mL syringe. Add 10.00 mL of each sample and standard to separate 14-mL screw-cap vials containing 2.00 mL of pentane. Shake vigorously for 1 min to effect the separation. Wait 60 s for the phases to separate. Inject 3.0-pL aliquots of the pentane layer into a GC equipped with a 2-mm internal diameter, 2-m long glass column packed with a stationary phase of 10% squalane on a packing material of 80/100 mesh Chromosorb WAW. Operate the column at 67 °C and a flow rate of 25 mL/min. [Pg.576]

Regardless of the techniques used to purify the KA oil, several waste streams are generated during the overall oxidation—separation processes and must be disposed of. The spent oxidation gas stream must be scmbbed to remove residual cyclohexane, but afterwards will stiU contain CO, CO2, and volatile hydrocarbons (especially propane, butane, and pentane). This gas stream is either burned and the energy recovered, or it is catalyticaHy abated. [Pg.241]

The Tokuyama Soda single-step catalyst consists of a zirconium phosphate catalyst loaded with 0.1—0.5 wt % paHadium (93—97). Pilot-plant data report (93) that at 140°C, 3 MPa, and a H2 acetone mole ratio of 0.2, the MIBK selectivity is 95% at an acetone conversion of 30%. The reactor product does not contain light methyl substituted methyl pentanes, and allows MIBK recovery in a three-column train with a phase separator between the first and second columns. [Pg.492]

The presence of ethane in Hquefied petroleum gas must be avoided because of the inabiHty of this lighter hydrocarbon to Hquefy under pressure at ambient temperature and its tendency to register abnormally high pressures in the LPG containers. On the other hand, the presence of pentane in Hquefied petroleum gas must also be avoided because this particular hydrocarbon, a Hquid at ambient temperatures and pressures, can separate in the Hquid state in the gas lines. [Pg.209]

Unsaturated oligomers up to aHyl-penta PG from a pentane extraction of polyol have also been separated and identified (114). [Pg.354]
