Patagonian

The basement complex for the Patagonian desert and arid northeastern Brazil is formed by metamorphosed Precambrian rocks. Landscapes are characterized by level erosion surfaces of different ages. The landscape is dissected by a large number of valleys. Large depressions are filled with marine and continental beds of sedimentary rocks. Rocks in the Andean system, that stretches the entire length of the west side of the continent, vary greatly. Many depressions are filled with sediments. In addition, many active volcanoes are responsible for periodic lava flows and the deposition of volcanic ash. East of the Andes, the land surface is level and slopes towards the Atlantic Ocean. Broad depressions contain saline or sodic soils.

Celenamide E (108), a tripeptide alkaloid from the Patagonian sponge Cliona chilensis, shows antibiotic activity against Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Micrococcus luteus, and Enterococcus faecalis at 50 pg/disk. An unusual feature is the presence of a N-terminal dehydroamino acid [87].

In the last five years only a few examples of asterosaponins have been published in the literature. These include new pentaglycosides from the starfishes Labidiaster annulatus, Luidia quinaria, Psilaster cassiope and Culcita novaeguineae, together with three new hexaglycosides from the Patagonian starfish Anasterias minuta. Only a few Pb isotope measurements have been made on deep ice cores and these show signatures similar to Greenland. Neodymium and Sr isotopes have been made on LGM-dust from East Antarctica to identify its origin. The results identify a South American (Patagonian) source for this dust, although further investigation is needed to determine the transport mechanisms.
