Past methods used to synthesize 7-pyrones consist of the acylation of methoxy-butyne9 or 4-methoxy-3-buten-2-one10 followed by acid-catalyzed hydrolysis and cyclization. Addition of ketenes to siloxydienes followed by acid-catalyzed elimination has also been employed.11 The present method is superior to these procedures because of the greater diversity of substituted 7-pyrones that can be constructed, and because of the fact that the previous methods demand the use of strong base and low temperatures that make them less suited for scale up. 

Black-Ground Method. The relative scattering power is determined from the tristimulus values Y of the pigmented medium applied in various film thicknesses to black substrates. Compared with the gray paste method, the black-ground method has the advantage that it is not restricted to any particular test medium. Apparatus spectrophotometer or tristimulus colorimeter. 

While the past methods of preventing hydrate plugs have been to use avoidance with thermodynamic inhibitors such as methanol or glycols, our new understanding of how plugs form, allows us to propose economic risk management (kinetics) to avoid hydrate formation. These concepts differ in type for oil-dominated and gas-dominated systems. 

The paste method can also be used with soluble derivatives. Since drying can be problematic with complexes of soluble derivatives, a minimum amount of water (20% maximum) is generally used. In order to reduce viscosity and associated mixing problems, a higher temperature is employed. A glass forms as the complex is removed from the mixer and cools. The glass can be milled and dried if necessary.

Today, instead of the Japanese rice past method, I am using the vacuum hot table (2) with a heat-activated adhesive, which is also harmless and reversible. I am stressing here the use of the vacuum hot table in the treatment of textiles as it is a fairly recent technique for us. The vacuum hot table was designed for painting conservators and used by them in re-lining old paintings. The first published account I know of in the use of this table for textiles is by Sheila Landi (3) of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Another reference is by Kathryn Scott... 

In practice, there are many sources of error apart from the inaccuracies of theory. In addition, there is human error, measurement error, batch variation of the colorants, and the nonreproducibility of the coloration process itself [2], Once a process is under control, the next step is to apply color formulation software. It has been shown that many of the past methods have not proven to be completely viable for the variety of color applications encountered today.

Biomedical research is itself changing. The scale and complexity of problems are increasing. This is in part due to the massive accumulation of knowledge in the postwar era. Many of the simple problems have been solved, the simplest diseases understood. What remain are the conditions that could not be understood with past methods. Research methods grow more powerful at the same time as harder problems come into view. Structural understanding of proteins and DNA are at the forefront of innovative research methods and pose many of today s most tantalizing problems.
