Paper Mask

The same adaptation of plot from the thriller form makes Christopher Morahan s Paper Mask an unusual melodrama. The main character s goal is to pretend that he is a doctor. The threat this poses to his patients, his friends, and to himself creates the tension that relentlessly moves us through this story. 

For those personnel working in low risk areas, the use of a paper comfort mask should be strongly discouraged. These masks do not provide a good seal around the mouth and nose and do not conform to the standards required for protection from lead-in-air. As a minimum standard, only those paper masks specifically designed for particulates and welding (with neoprene face seals and adjustable nose clips)... 

B. Protective respiratory gear may be a simple paper mask, a cartridge filter respirator, or a positive-pressure air-supplied respirator. Respirators must be properly fitted for each user. 

A paper mask might provide partial protection against gross quantities of airborne dust particles, but does not prevent exposure to gases, vapors, or fumes.

Initial evaluations of chemicals produced for screening are performed by smelling them from paper blotters. However, more information is necessary given the time and expense required to commercialize a new chemical. No matter how pleasant or desirable a potential odorant appears to be, its performance must be studied and compared with available ingredients in experimental fragrances. A material may fail to Hve up to the promise of its initial odor evaluation for a number of reasons. It is not at all uncommon to have a chemical disappear in a formulation or skew the overall odor in an undesirable way. Some materials are found to be hard to work with in that their odors stick out and caimot be blended weU. Because perfumery is an individuaHstic art, it is important to have more than one perfumer work with a material of interest and to have it tried in several different fragrance types. Aroma chemicals must be stable in use if their desirable odor properties are to reach the consumer. Therefore, testing in functional product appHcations is an important part of the evaluation process. Other properties that can be important for new aroma chemicals are substantivity on skin and cloth, and the abiHty to mask certain malodors.

Dust and fume masks eonsist of one or two eartridges eontaining a suitable filter (e.g. paper or resin-impregnated wool) to remove partieulate eontaminant. The effieieney of the filters against partieles of various sizes is quoted in manufaeturers literature and national standards. Sueh masks do not remove vapour from the air. 

Faeepieee fit is the limiting faetor on the degree of proteetion afforded. Effieieney tends to inerease with use, i.e. as the filter beeomes loaded, but the resistanee to breathing also inereases. Paper eup type masks are also available. 

Binder formulas for carpet backing, aluminum foil to paper, vinyl flooring, tire cord, paper labeling, masking tape, and oriented polypropylene tape applications are available from Midgley and Rea in Skiest [215].

A recent paper from Katritsky summarises all the preparations of achiral dissymmetrical thioureas and proposes a new one, based on l-(alkyl/arylthio-carbamoyl)benzotriazoles, which act as masked isothiocyanates.
