LC is currently used extensively in the photographic industry. One application is to quantify some of the components of photographic paper. As demands to reduce analysis time increase, an analytical method that can give improved productivity is required. One possible alternative to LC is capillary electrochromatography (CEC). In a recent paper, this analytical protocol was applied to separate some color photographic paper components <2002MI1>. [Pg.297]

Papers which are acidic as manufactured can be stabilized by a deacidification procedure. Several processes have been developed for this purpose, the most successful of which provide neutralization of the acid present and leave a residue such as calcium carbonate or magnesium carbonate as reserve alkalinity in the paper. This alkalinity serves to protect the paper as acidity develops from paper components during aging or is introduced by atmospheric contamination. The amount of reserve alkalinity can be determined by adding a measured volume of standard acid solution in excess to a weighed specimen of the paper and back-titrating the excess to neutrality with standard base solution. [Pg.282]

The aqueous alcohol systems were chosen for the current research because (1) aggregation in these systems was found by several independent experimental methods (2) while there are several investigations regarding their KBI s, there is no agreement between the reported data. This becomes clear if we compare the peak Gn values in the system 1-propanol (1)— water (2). (Throughout this paper, component 1 represents the alcohol and component 2 the water.) (3) For aU the selected systems, accurate thermodynamic data are available. (4) Last but not least, SAXS data are available for most of the systems chosen (except the methanol—water system), but a systematic comparison between the KBI s extracted from the SAXS data and those obtained thermodynamically was not yet made. [Pg.3]

Nerve Agent Liquid Can be detected by M8 and M9 papers. Component Liquid/Vapor Currently there is no field system employed by the U.S. Military that is designed to detect Binary Nerve Agent Components. [Pg.38]

The obvious solution to the problem is therefore to put into the system particles or additives of opposite charge to cause agglomeration of the paper components to larger clumps that cannot go thorough the wire. This is accomplished by so-called retention aids. [Pg.744]

Planar chromatography works in similar fashion, except that the stationary phase is a flat sheet of absorbent material such as paper. Components of the mixture are held back by the stationary phase either by adsorption (e.g. on the surface of alumina) or because they dissolve in it (e.g. in the moisture within paper). See paper chromatography thin-layer chromatography. [Pg.53]

Chemiluminescence has also been proposed as a novel tool in paper conservation studies [654,655]. CL phenomena can be used for assessing the thermal and oxidative degradation pathways of paper-based historical documents. In contrast with the usual accelerated degradation experiments in climatic chambers, measurement of isothermal CL is quick. The influence of all paper components (alkalinity, metal content, cellulose peroxides and carbonyl groups, moisture) and exposure to light will be investigated in the framework of the PAPYLUM project (ending October 2004). [Pg.94]

A simpler solution to the problem of paper contamination is to allow for a paper component in the plastics fraction and to use a processing method which can disintegrate the cellulose fibers into small fragments such that they act as particulate fillers in the plastics. Such a method has been developed at Chalmers University of Technology (the CUT-method) making it possible to reprocess both the plastics fraction of municipal solid waste (PFMW) and a number of different industrial plastic waste materials contaminated with paper. Sample B source-separated plastics waste from households consisting of HDPE 65%, LDPE 20%, and PP 15% (Kolding, Denmark). The addition of edge trimmings from the packaging industry (15% LDPE, 85% cellulose) comprised the paper component, representing industrial plastic waste with paper. [Pg.112]

Sample D post-consumer mixed plastics waste, HDPE 70%, LDPE 20% and various plastics 10% (supplied by Cadauta, Turin, Italy), with addition of a paper component (telephone directories). [Pg.112]
