Ten of 12 workers experienced acute irritant contact dermatitis of the hands after 2 days of direct contact. In the most severe case, a woman with no previous skin problems, who wore latex gloves intermittently, had painful swelling of the fingers of both hands with redness and vesicles on the palms. The affected skin later became thickened and showed a brownish discoloration. Another worker noticed small vesicles on the forehead, probably due to scratching with contaminated fingers. All cutaneous reactions cleared within 3 weeks of termination of exposure. Gas chromatograph analysis of the NMP used at the factory did not reveal any contaminating compounds. [Pg.493]

Thallium, atomic no. 81 This element is better known for its poisonous properties and links with almost undetected deaths and Agatha Christie -type murder mysteries.2 Thallium compounds are used in some countries as cheap insecticides, particularly for killing cockroaches. Intake of this element causes stomach pains, vomiting and nausea, painful soles and palms of hands, limb weakness, double vision, involuntary eye movements, hallucina tions, characteristic hair loss and white lines across the nails. The symptoms are often mis-diagnosed as other diseases. Treatment is with the chemical Prussian Blue... [Pg.115]

SweUing and wrinkling of the pahns soon after exposure to water occurred in an 18-year-old-woman taking rofecoxib for mixed connective tissue disease (120). The swelling followed exposure for 1 to a few minutes to water at any temperature. The swelhng developed rapidly and was accompanied by symptoms of mild pain and discomfort. Over the following 2 hours, the palms would return to normal. Because of the temporal correlation with the use of rofecoxib, it was withdrawn, and 3 weeks later her symptoms had almost completely resolved. [Pg.1009]

Fluorouracil, alone or in combination regimens, via continuous or intermittent infusions or bolus doses, has been associated with hand-foot syndrome or pahnar-plantar erythrodysesthesia, a rare syndrome of unknown cause, characterized by varjdng degrees of painful, erythematous, swollen palms of the hand and soles of the feet... [Pg.1412]

Chemotherapy-induced acral erythema (Cl AE), atoxic reaction to a number of different chemotherapeutic agents, causes a symmetrical, painful erythema of the palms and soles, often culminating in the formation of vesicles or bullae. Some of the well known chemotherapeutic agents responsible are cytarabine, fluorouracil and methotrexate. [Pg.688]

Arnold Krochmal, Ph.D., in his hook Medicinal Plants of the United States, briefly mentions Gulf Coast Indians who made an infusion of the leaves and roots for dysentery and for relieving stomach pain. From the inner trunk bark, they also made poultices for insect and snake bites and skin ulcers. The Houma of Louisiana used a decoction of the root for sore eyes, high blood pressure, and kidney problems. The fruits of closely related species of palms have been used as medicine tWughout the Caribbean and the Yucatan in Mexico. Sabal japa fruit bears a close resemblance to the fruit of saw palmetto an extract of that fruit is used as a sedative and digestive stimulant. It was also used for respiratory problems and for weakness of the reproductive system. [Pg.53]
