Thus, numerous low-emission paints have been developed, including high-solids paints, waterborne paints, aqueous dispersions for industrial use, powder coatings, and radiation-curing coatings. At the forefront in adopting these environmentally friendly products is heavy industry, in particular the automobile and household appliance industries. Emulsion polymerization also has the advantages of good heat transfer and low viscosity, which follow from the presence of the aqueous phase. The resulting aqueous dispersion of polymer is called a latex. The polymer can be subsequently separated from the aqueous portion of the latex or the latter can be used directly in eventual appUcations. Emulsion Polymerization. Emulsion polymerization is the most important industrial method for the preparation of acryhc polymers. The principal markets for aqueous dispersion polymers made by emulsion polymerization of acryhc esters are the paint, paper, adhesives, textile, floor pohsh, and leather industries, where they are used principally as coatings or binders. It is claimed to be an improvement over metallic actives used for antifouling paint and wood preservation (46,47). Decylthioethylamine and its water-soluble hydrochloride are claimed to be especially effective at controlling biofilm in cooling water appHcations (48—50). The hydroxymethylpyra2ole shown is also suggested to have properties that are well suited to the protection of aqueous products or emulsions (51,52). [Pg.101]

Prussian Blue. Reaction of [Fe(CN)3] with an excess of aqueous h on(Ill) produces the finely divided, intensely blue precipitate Pmssian Blue [1403843-8] (tetrairon(Ill) tris(hexakiscyanoferrate)), Fe4[Fe(CN)3]. Pmssian Blue is identical to Turnbull s Blue, the name which originally was given to the material produced by reaction of [Fe(CN)3] with excess aqueous h on(Il). The soHd contains or has absorbed on its surface a large and variable number of water molecules, potassium ions (if present in the reaction), and h on(Ill) oxide. The h on(Il) centers are low spin and diamagnetic h on(Ill) centers are high spin. Variations of composition and properties result from variations in reaction conditions. Rapid precipitation in the presence of potassium ion affords a colloidal suspension of Pmssian Blue [25869-98-1] which has the approximate composition KFe[Fe(CN)3]. Pmssian Blue compounds are used as pigments in inks and paints and its formation on sensitized paper is utilized in the production of blueprints. [Pg.435]

Wa.ter-Ba.sedPaint. Fluorescent pigments also have some use in water-based paint systems, with many being sensitive to aqueous media, especially at pH above 7.5. For extended shelf stabiHty, Radiant P-1600 or P-1700 Series, Day-Glo T and GT pigments, and Sinloihi FZ-3000 Series are recommended. [Pg.303]

Available Forms. Phthalocyanines are available as powders, in paste, or Hquid forms. They can be dispersed in various media suitable for aqueous, nonaqueous, or multipurpose systems, eg, polyethylene, polyamide, or nitrocellulose. Inert materials like clay, barium sulfate, calcium carbonates, or aluminum hydrate are the most common soHd extenders. Predispersed concentrates of the pigments, like flushes, are interesting for manufacturers of paints and inks (156), who do not own grinding or dispersing equipment. In general, polycarbonate resins have fair chemical resistance to aqueous solutions of acids or bases, as well as to fats and oils. Chemical attack by amines or ammonium hydroxide occurs, however, and aUphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons promote crazing of stressed molded samples. Eor these reasons, care must be exercised in the choice of solvents for painting and coating operations. Eor sheet appHcations, polycarbonate is commonly coated with a sihcone—sihcate hardcoat which provides abrasion resistance as well as increased solvent resistance. Starch pyrodextrins and British gums have the abiUty, in aqueous dispersion, to form films capable of bonding like or unlike materials. Thus, they have uses as adhesives for envelopes, postage stamps, and other products. These dextrins are used in glass-fiber siting to protect the extmded fiber from abrasion, and as binders for metal core castings, water color paints, briquettes, and many other composite materials (qv). [Pg.346]

The alkoxy titanate compounds formed by reaction of one mole of tetraalkyl titanate with one mole of a dialkanolamine are excellent esterification catalysts for the manufacture of phthalate-based plasticizers (112). If a 1 1 molar mixture of alkanolamine and water is used ia place of the alkanolamine, oligomeric titanate complexes are formed, which have high catalyst activity and can be used as thixotropic additives to paints and other aqueous coating formulations (113). [Pg.148]

A.mmonium ben ate [1863-63-41], C H COONH, mp, 198°C. This is a dull white powder which gradually loses ammonia on exposure to air. Its aqueous solution, it is slightly acidic. Butyl glycol ethers, the largest volume derivatives of -butyl alcohol used ia solvent appHcations (10), are obtained from the reaction of 1-butanol with ethylene oxide. The most important of these derivatives, 2-butoxyethanol, is used principally ia vinyl and acryHc paints as well as ia lacquers and varnishes. It is also employed ia aqueous cleaners to solubilize organic surfactants. 2-Butoxyethanol [111-76-2] has achieved some growth at the expense of the lower alkoxyethanols (ie, methoxy and ethoxyethanol) because of 2-butoxyethanol s lower toxicity. [Pg.358]

Beat-Cured Restm. For optimum comfort and to impede further loss of chewing efficiency, close adaptation of the denture base to contiguous oral tissues is required, which necessitates custom-made appHances. Nearly all dentures are made of acryHc resins. A wax pattern is used to form a custom denture base in which the denture teeth are embedded. A plaster or dental-stone investment spHt mold of this wax denture base and teeth is prepared. The wax portion is removed and the surface of the resulting mold cavity is painted with a separating medium, usually an aqueous solution of alginate, to aid in the removal of the cured acryHc from the plaster mold. [Pg.488]

Potassium. Potassium 2-ethyIhexanoate [3164-85-0] functions best in conjunction with cobalt. Potassium strongly activates cobalt in aqueous coatings and in high soHds paints based on low molecular-weight vehicles. [Pg.221]
