The vast geographical expanse of the Asia Pacific region, covering approximately 40 countries, from tiny Pacific islands populated by only a few thousand inhabitants to some of the most populous nations on earth such as India, Indonesia and China, poses a challenge in identifying and addressing the problems of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in this part of the world. Because many of these countries are island states, it has erroneously been assumed that iodine deficiency is not a significant endemic problem... [Pg.1227]

Traditional daily use of aqueous extracts of kava in the Pacific Islands has not been associated with any increased incidence of hepatotoxicity (Schmidt et al. 2005). Hypotheses for causes of hepatotoxicity reported outside of, but not in. Pacific Island populations include differences in solvent extraction (acetone and ethanol extracts versus traditional aqueous preparations), improper plant parts being included in manufactured products (i.e., the inclusion of stem peelings that may contain toxic compounds), increased levels of other hepatotoxic substances in populations taking manufactured kava extracts (Gurrie and Clough 2003), and genetic differences (Russmann et al. 2001). A review of hepatotoxicity cases indicated that cases were reported after the use of aqueous, ethanolic, and acetonic kava extracts, suggesting a lack of association between the solvent and hepatotoxicity (Teschke et al. 2009). [Pg.667]

The definitions of racial groups are not totally satisfactory (e.g. what is Black ), and ethnicity and geography can wreak havoc on the meaning of representative for example Pacific Islanders and Asians make up 9.8% of the Pacific states population and 61.8% of the US state of Hawaii (US Bureau of the Census, 1991). What is Hispanic, other than a language group that contains a combination of genetic groups from Europe, Africa and Native America Diseases such as stroke are... [Pg.233]

The American population is equally diverse and expansive. There are almost 35 million people who are age 65 or older. African Americans constitute 12.8% of the population, Asian and Pacific Islanders 4%, American Indians 0.9%, and Caucasians make up 82% of the population (5). Because the United States is largely a nation of immigrants, there are literally hundreds of additional ethnic groups that are part of the American... [Pg.398]

Relatively little is known about the risk of VTE in ethnic populations. African-Americans appear to be at somewhat higher risk of VTE than are Americans of predominantly European ancestry, whereas Hispanic-Americans may be somewhat protected. " Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders appear to have a strikingly lower incidence of VTE. [Pg.374]

Third, nationwide, students of color are a steadily growing percentage of the public school population. According to the U.S. Department of Education (1997), percentages of students of color grew from 22% in 1974 to 36% in 1997. The percentages in 1997 were as follows 64% White, 17% African American, 14% Latino, 4% Asian American and Pacific Islander (aapi), and 1% Native American. Compared to 1974, Whites decreased by 14%, Native Americans remained the same at 1%, aapis increased by 3%, African Americans increased by 2%, and Latinos increased by 8%. [Pg.350]

In the Pacific Ocean it occurs in British Columbia (10), some coastal locations in the Gulf of Alaska (pers. Obs. and figs, in 21), Unimak Is. in the Aleutians (unpubl. obs., 1965), and bays in north eastern Japan (14,30 ). A population from the northeast coast of North Island, New Zealand, which appeared after fish and shellfish kills, resembled tamarensis, but had an unusually narrow sixth precing-... [Pg.83]

Perhaps someday I ll visit Norfolk Island to see the dream fish in person. My travel agent tells me that the island is serviced by two airlines, Norfolk Jet and Air New Zealand, with a travel time of two hours from Sydney. The next time you have a map handy, take a peek. The island is located in the South Pacific Ocean, east of Australia, and has a population of about 1,800. British attempts at establishing the island as a penal colony in the 19th century were ultimately abandoned. Most of the coastline consists of nearly inaccessible cliffs. [Pg.10]
