Channel P-type

GaAs JEET devices have been tested as gas sensors. An n-type SnO layer was used to form a hetero-junction to the p-type channel region. Palladium on top of the SnO caused the device to detect NO at a device temperature around 200°C [101].

P-type channels inactivate extremely slowly and are insensitive to both DHPs and co-conotoxin GVIA, but are blocked by the spider venom peptide co-agatoxin IVA, a peptide consisting of 48 amino acids isolated from the American funnel-web spider Agelenopsis aperta. 

The inactivation kinetics of the Q-type channel are similar to the N-type channel but are resistant to DHPs and co-conotoxin GVIA. Q-type channels are inhibited by co-agatoxin IVA but less effectively than co-agatoxin IVA blocks P-type channels (review Miljanich and Ramachandran, 1995).

The P-type channels were first observed in the Purkinje cells and are inhibited by a toxin derived from a funnel-web spider poison, but not by other calcium channel-blocking agents. P-type channels are widely distributed throughout the CNS... 

Nanomolar concentrations of co-agatoxin IVA known to fully and selectively block P-type channels [22,72], cause only a 5-10% blockade of Ca channel current in bovine chromaffin cells [79]. Previous studies reported larger contributions of P-type channels to the whole chromaffin cell Ca " currents however, this blockade is now attributable to inhibition of Q-type channels [80] by sFTX [81 ] or large concentrations of co-agatoxin IVA [55,82]. In cat chromaffin cells, combined co-conotoxin GVIA plus nisoldipine blocked 90% of the current, leaving little room for P-type channels [64], In rat [47] and mouse chromaffin cells [62], the co-agatoxin IVA-sensitive current fraction was only... 

Thus, in all species studied, P-type channels are barely expressed in chromaffin cells. This, together with the difficulty of separating the aiA subunit into P- and Q-type channels [83] suggests the convenience of speaking of P/Q-type channels rather than of two separate Ca channel subtypes. 

JFETs are made with both n-type and p-type channels. 

One variety of MOSFET consists of two small islands of p-type semiconductor that are created within a substrate of n-type silicon, as shown in cross section in Figure 18.26 the islands are joined by a narrow p-type channel. Appropriate metal connections (somce and drain) are made to these islands an insulating layer of sihcon dioxide is formed by the siulace oxidation of the silicon. A final connector (gate) is then fashioned onto the siu4ace of this insulating layer.
