P-Chloro-m-cresol

Preparation of 2 -Chloro-6 -diethylamino-3 -methylfluoran (68d). A mixture of 2-(4-diethylamino-2-hydroxybenzoyl)benzoic acid (0.1 mol), p-chloro-m-cresol (0.1 mol), and 85% sulfuric acid (150 g) was stirred at 110-120°C for 5 h, and poured into water (1500ml). The precipitate was filtered off, washed with water, and then refluxed with a mixture of toluene (500ml) and 5% aqueous sodium hydroxide (200ml) for 1 h. The toluene layer was then worked up in the same manner as above to give 2 -chloro-6 -diethylamino-3 -methylfluoran in 85% yield as a white powder, mp 235-236°C. 

Phenolic biocides are still used extensively throughout the Figure 4 PCMC metalworking industry to preserve aqueous based metalworking fluids. One of the most commonly used phenolic biocides is p-chloro-m-cresol, (see PCMC, Figure 4). 

Biological When p-chloro-m-cresol was statically incubated in the dark at 25 °C with yeast extract and settled domestic wastewater inoculum, significant biodegradation with rapid adaptation was observed. At concentrations of 5 and 10 mg/L, 78 and 76% biodegradation, respectively, were observed after 7 d (Tabak et al., 1981).
