On the basis of the foregoing discussion, it appears that, if traditional criteria for hazard evaluation are applied to the toxicologic data on experimental animals, there is little room for complacency r arding current ambient concentrations of ozone. Functional, biochemical, and structural effects in both pulmonary and extrapulmonary sterns have been reported by numerous investigators at or near concentrations that are at least occasionally achieved in some polluted urban centers. Unfortunately, there are no adequate methods for extrapolating data to obtain reliable quantitative estimates of population risk at environmental concentrations near the standard, and there is no assurance that the risk is zero. [Pg.376]

On musty organic odors and tastes of natural origin, as from leaves and weeds, ozonation has not proved entirely effective, though it has definite effects. In 8 months of 1951 and 1952 raw water characteristics were very similar. With ozonation functioning in 1951 only 20% of the plant effluent samples were determined as having musty odors, while in 1952 without ozonation, in spite of other treatments used, musty odors were present in 28% of the samples. [Pg.441]

Raw data must be analyzed and transformed into a format useful for specific purposes. Summary tables, graphs, and geographic distributions are some of the formats used for data display. Air quality information often consists of a large body of data collected at a variety of locations and over different seasons. Table 15-3 shows the tabular format used by the California Air Resources Board to reduce ozone hourly measurements to a format which shows information about compliance with air quality standards (6). Nickel peroxide is a solid, insoluble oxidant prepared by reaction of nickel (II) salts with hypochlorite or ozone in aqueous alkaline solution. This reagent when used in nonpolar medium is similar to, but more reactive than, activated manganese dioxide in selectively oxidizing allylic or acetylenic alcohols. It also reacts rapidly with amines, phenols, hydrazones and sulfides so that selective oxidation of allylic alcohols in the presence of these functionalities may not be possible. By including electron correlation in the wave function the UHF method introduces more biradical character into the wave function than RHF. The spin contamination part is also purely biradical in nature, i.e. a UHF treatment in general will overestimate the biradical character. Most singlet states are well described by a closed-shell wave function near the equilibrium geometry, and in those cases it is not possible to generate a UHF solution which has a lower energy than the RHF. The biradical resonance structure for ozone requires two singly occupied MOs, and it is clear that an RHF type wave function, which requires all orbitals to be doubly occupied, cannot describe this. A UHF type wave function, however, allows the a and /3 orbitals to be spatially different, and can to a certain extent incorporate both resonance structures. Systems with biradical character will often have a (singlet) UHF wave function different from an RHF. [Pg.115]

This process does not lead to net ozone depletion because it is rapidly followed by reaction 2, which regenerates the ozone. Reactions 2 and 3 have, however, another important function, namely the absorption of solar energy as a result, the temperature increases with altitude, and this inverted temperature profile gives rise to the stratosphere (see Figure 1). In the lower layer, the troposphere, the temperature decreases with altitude and vertical mixing occurs on a relatively short time scale. In contrast, the stratosphere is very stable towards vertical mixing because of its inverted temperature profile. [Pg.25]

Implications to Humans. Acidic precipitation has not been observed with concentrations that pose a concern to human exposure. The acidic airborne pollutants in the particulate or gaseous forms such as the oxides of sulphur and of nitrogen, and the associated photochemical oxidant ozone, are inhaled. This may lead to the irritation of the respiratory tract, and subsequently to impaired lung function, aggravated asthma and bronchitis. [Pg.56]
