Oxygen shipment

In normal practice, inhibitors such as hydroquinone (HQ) [123-31 -9] or the monomethyl ether of hydroquinone (MEHQ) [150-76-5] are added to acrylic monomers to stabilize them during shipment and storage. Uninhibited acrylic monomers should be used prompdy or stored at 10°C or below for no longer than a few weeks. Improperly iahibited monomers have the potential for violent polymerizations. HQ and MEHQ require the presence of oxygen to be effective inhibitors therefore, these monomers should be stored in contact with air and not under inert atmosphere. Because of the low concentration of inhibitors present in most commercial grades of acrylic monomers (generally less than 100 ppm), removal before use is not normally required. However, procedures for removal of inhibitors are available (67). [Pg.165]

Butadiene reacts readily with oxygen to form polymeric peroxides, which are not very soluble in Hquid butadiene and tend to setde at the bottom of the container because of their higher density. The peroxides are shock sensitive therefore it is imperative to exclude any source of oxygen from butadiene. Addition of antioxidants like /-butylcatechol (TBC) or butylated hydroxy toluene (BHT) removes free radicals that can cause rapid exothermic polymerizations. Butadiene shipments now routinely contain about 100 ppm TBC. Before use, the inhibitor can easily be removed (247,248). Monroe Wall of the USDA Eastern Regional Research Laboratory had been collecting plants for steroids that are oxygenated at positions 11 or 12, which could be converted into cortisone and related compounds. The search for a cancer cure led Wall to move to the Research Triangle Institute in 1960, to work on the isolation of plant-derived antitumor agents. The final product is drained off from the retort, cooled and stored in aluminium tanks in which, if necessary, it is stabilized with phosphoric acid, pyrophosphate and 8-hydroxyquinoline. The stability of hydrogen peroxide with a high percentage is very high. After being stored a year in aluminium tanks it loses hardly more than 0.5 to 1 per cent of active oxygen. The facilities used to harvest the ocean thermal energy are called OTEC plants (Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion). To achieve their maximum potential they must be located in the open ocean near the equator, far from any market. Several schemes to transmit their output to the market have been examined. The most practical appears to be use the electric power to electrolyze water to produce hydrogen and oxygen. The oxygen can be vented and the hydrogen liquefied for shipment to market. This scheme allows the OTEC plant to produce a storable fuel that can be used for most energy needs. [Pg.45]
