Oxantel pamoate

Pyrantel pamoate is a broad-spectrum antihelminthic highly effective for the treatment of pinworm, ascaris, and Trichostrongylus orientalis infections. It is moderately effective against both species of hookworm. It is not effective in trichuriasis or strongyloidiasis. Oxantel pamoate, an analog of pyrantel not available in the USA, has been used successfully in the treatment of trichuriasis the two drugs have been combined for their broad-spectrum antihelminthic activity.

Oxantel may also be used to treat ascariasis, enterobiasis, hookworm infections and trichuriasis if given in combination with pyrantel pamoate or levamisole [18,23]. Thus, a combination of pyrantel pamoate (5 mg/kg) and oxantel pamoate (5 mg/kg) given on two consecutive days produced 94% reduction in egg output in a large number of Chinese patients infected with Ascaris, whipworms and hookworms [34]. Like pyrantel pamoate, oxantel is also well tolerated producing only mild and transient side effects [18].

Mechanism Pyrantel pamoate and its congener, oxantel pamoate, stimulate nicotinic receptors present at neuromuscular junctions of nematodes. Contraction of muscles occurs, followed by a depolarization-induced paralysis.
