The erbium ion is coordinated to eight carboxyhc oxygens [2.362—2.415 A)] from four oxalate (acid oxalate) moieties which forms a square antiprism around Er(III). A water molecule forms the cap (Er—OH2 =2.441 A) above the large square face of the antiprism. The acid oxalates (HOOCCOO) and oxalate ions occupy the crystallographic sites at random. The statistically averaged oxalate groups are centrosymmetric and planar. A very short H-bond (2.43 A) has been observed between two water molecules in two equivalent molecules, but the physical significance is difficult to assess because these waters are disordered in the molecule.

Another complexing agent which should be mentioned is oxalic acid. Oxalates are popularly thought to depress iron absorption and are often used to attempt to explain the observation by Lay-risse and Martinez-Torres (15) and others that spinach is a poor source of dietary iron. 

Thorium oxalate, ThfCjOdi 611 0, Is precipitated as a while amorphous powder when oxalic acid is adtled to a solution of n thorium salt. It dissolves readily in solutions of ammonium ourhunate uud ammonium oxalate, but is less Roluble in sulfuric, acid than tho ran earth oxalates and is insoluble in nitric acid. Double alkali oxalates, acid oxalates, and mixed salts have been prepared. 

I. Oxalic Acid. Oxalic acid is present in normal urine and blood (F2). It cannot be determined by the standard chromatographic technique described earlier, since it gives a streak and not a well-defined spot (N21). Many colorimetric techniques, which are, however, not absolutely spedfic, have been described for its determination the most recent ones have been developed by Archer et al. (A8) and Dempsey et al. (D12).
