As soon as it was appreciated that oxygen toxicity was somehow involved in retrolental fibroplasia, antioxidant administration was empirically investigated in both animal models and babies. In 1949, Owens and Owens reported a protective effect of vitamin E unfortunately this could not be substantiated in subsequent controlled trials. Phelps and Rosenbaum (1977) investigated whether vitamin E supplementation would influence oxygen-induced retinopathy in kittens and found it to be beneficial in reducing the severity of the lesions. Nevertheless, vitamin E has not yet been used with much success in preterm babies. [Pg.138]

OWENS has prepared antibodies to PCP in goats. When administered to mice the PCP levels in blood rose tenfold as an antibody-bound form that was readily excreted in urine. BROWNE tested the selfadministration by rats of 1,000 compounds related (and not related) to PCP, some of which produced PCP-like effects. One compound that was self-administered prevented the entrance of PCP into brain. BALSTER gave a general review of the effects produced by PCP in laboratory animals and showed that some effects were similar to those produced by amphetamine, some to barbiturates, and some to antipsychotics. This response profile makes PCP a unique drug that stands alone in its complex effects and toxicity. [Pg.9]

The pollution of ecosystems, either inadvertently or deliberately, has been a fact of life for millennia (Pickering and Owen, 1994). In recent times, the evolution of industrial operations has led to issues related to the disposal of a wide variety of chemical contaminants (Easterbrook, 1995). Chemical wastes that were once exotic have become commonplace and hazardous (Tedder and Pohland, 1993). Recognition of this makes it all the more necessary that steps be taken to terminate the pollution, preferably at the source or before it is discharged into the environment. It is also essential that the necessary tests be designed to detect the pollution and its effect on living forms. [Pg.20]
