Outcomes for children

Psychopharmacology research in children is designed to generate new knowledge and improve the outcomes for children who suffer from clinical conditions that warrant treatment. The Report described training for teachers as inadequate and reiterated the serious flaws in the SEN system (p. 40), identified by the Audit Commission (2002) and Ofsted (2004) reports, relating to standards and consistency of provision, the statutory assessment process, fair access to schools and outcomes for children. The Committee declared that it found it both surprising and highly concerning (p. 40) that these problems had still not been addressed.

Overall, if integration is properly planned and resourced and there is conunitment to it, the outcomes for children and schools are positive.

As mentioned previously, clinicians who operate solely or primarily from within the local school increasingly serve emotionally disturbed youth. Some of these services have been established in conjunction with efforts aimed at reducing the number of youth who need to leave their local school or their homes in order to receive treatment for their problems. School-based clinicians have an opportunity to produce more beneficial functional outcomes for children because they can easily observe outcomes, modify treatment regimes, and collaborate with the child s other providers. 

Major reviews have identified effective school-based programs that promote positive outcomes for children and adolescents in the areas of positive youth development (Catalano et al., 1998), violence prevention (e.g., Elliot, 1998), drug prevention (e.g., Drug Strategies, 1999 Center for Substance Abuse Prevention,... 

When parents use drugs, what happens to the children What we do know is told in statistics indicating a high likelihood of neglect and abuse and poor outcomes for many, as they in turn become adults. Whilst the texture of that deprivation of a nurturing environment is missing from these various researches, they convey with some clarity the scale of the problem and are summarized below.
