A statement of each method used in the testing of the sample. The statement shall indicate the location of data that establish that the methods used in the testing of the sample meet proper standards of accuracy and reliability as applied to the product tested. (If the method employed is in the current revision of the United States Pharmacopeia, National Formulary, Association of Official Analytical Chemists, Book of Methods, or in other recognized standard references, or is detailed in an approved new drug application and the referenced method is not modified, a statement indicating the method and reference will suffice). The suitability of all testing methods used shall be verified under actual conditions of use. 

The next stage in the risk assessment is the control of the risk. In established workplaces, some control of risk will already be in place. The effectiveness of these controls needs to be assessed so that an estimate of the residual risk may be made. Many hazards have had specific acts, regulations or other recognized standards developed to reduce associated risks. Examples of such hazards are fire, electricity, lead and asbestos. The relevant legislation and any accompanying approved codes of practice or guidance should be consulted first and any recommendations implemented. Advice on control measures may also be available from trade associations, trade unions or employers organizations. 

Several other methods for the direct determination of oxygen have met with some success when applied to coal and therefore deserve mention here, because it is conceivable that at some future date one of these methods (or a modification thereof) could find approval as a recognized standard method for the direct determination of oxygen in coal. 

The simplest unsaturated carbon compound, ethylene, exerts a major influence on many if not all aspects of plant growth and development. Although ethylene is a gas at physiological temperatures and pressures, it is now recognized as a plant hormone because it is a natural product of metabolism, acts in trace amounts and is neither a substrate nor cofactor in reactions which are associated with major developmental plant processes. Whether or not ethylene meets all the standard criteria established for hormones, there is no question that this gas is a powerful natural regulating substance in plant metabolism, and that it acts and interacts with other recognized plant hormones. With the advent of gas chromatography, ethylene has become the simplest plant hormone to assay since it is evolved from the tissues and requires no extraction or purification prior to analysis. 

Food chemicals and other substances employed as adjuncts in foods and as aids in food processing must meet recognized standards of performance and quality for their intended uses and applications. The requirements contained in the monographs of the FCC pertain to the characteristics of food chemicals at the time of their use. 

A STANDARD IS NOT AN END PRODUCT but a vehicle to assist records keepers in achieving the principal mission of their organizations, namely, to preserve information and to make this information available to others. The object of this chapter is to emphasize the need for records organizations to direct some of the efforts of their research and conservation laboratories toward the development of standards for records materials, to develop those standards in cooperation with a recognized standards organization, and to devise an improved mechanism for making use of specifications. 

Primary standards are recognized to have the highest metrological qualities for their specified fields of application.248 The list of primary standards is established at the international level by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM), and every nation can take from this list primary standards, as well as add other primary standards, with the objective of obtaining a specific list of primary standards to suit the nation s needs.
