Other Leadership Responsibilities

Another area that often needs management attention is employee orientation. In particular, supervisors should provide a formal orientation to employees new to their department. Too often supervisors underestimate the importance of providing clear instruction about safety practices such as proper lifting or cutting techniques in the context of a new employee s job. The ideal orientation should include a new employee orientation checklist and an introduction to the behavioral process to help ensure new employees learn about the hazards in their areas. [Pg.154]

Consider the range of leadership responsibilities in a maternity unit. Maternity services are organized in different ways in different countries. In Britain, Canada and other countries, normal births are managed by midwives with obstetricians managing complex births and associated medical problems. The leadership roles in this context include ... [Pg.348]

There are two types of leaders those who lead by coercion and those who lead by example. The question that arises is, Which is the right type of leadership It scans that there are occasions where leadership by power is appropriate (or the only way), but this type of leadership seems more appropriate, for example, in the military. Please keep in mind that power does not, in itself, have to be bad. Many people who have leadership responsibility use power in a responsible manner to help others. Many good leaders nse their leadership position and power not as a divisive tool, but to help people get things done. [Pg.57]

Some people already have sufficient self-efficacy, personal control, and optimism when assigned leadership responsibilities. As discussed in Chapter 15, they feel empowered ("1 can make a difference"). Still, these individuals may need some basic training in communication, social recognition, and behavior-change principles. Others may lack one or more of the three person states that facilitate feelings of empowerment. So, in addition to education and training, they need a support system to build their sense of self-efficacy, personal control, and optimism. [Pg.466]

Extracurricular Activities/Other Experience. If you have other experience you want to highlight you were treasurer of a club, a member of student government, or held a leadership or other position of responsibility in an association— you can list it here. As with your work experience, you should list your position or title, the name of the organization, and your dates of involvement. Under each entry, summarize your responsibilities in the position. You can list the experience in reverse chronological order as you do in the Work Experience section. Or, you can list it in order of importance or relevance to the position for which you are applying. [Pg.156]

Robust processes will have owners that have defined roles, responsibilities, and accountabilities. These process owners must be fully dedicated to their process. They must know their process capabilities and expectations, the interrelationship between their process and other processes and manage them like a business unto themselves. Functional management must support process owners, and leadership must understand and lead the QMS effort as an ongoing program, treating it as the integral part of the business that it is. [Pg.241]

Some retirees react to total leisure as a selfish way to live—self-gratification without concern or compassion for others. Not so. You can adopt Plan A as your retirement lifestyle and still make contributions to the lives of others on a personal, one-on-one basis. You can continue to pay your human and social dues. Plan A just means that you refuse to have organizational connections that require responsibilities. Participate in church life, but refuse to assume a leadership role. Be a member of a fraternal organization, but refuse to accept an office. Enjoy country-club life, but back away when it comes to being on a committee. You... [Pg.61]

Three elements deal with alignment. Leadership addresses how well all leaders, not just the CEO or members of the senior management team, approach their responsibility to inspire and shape the actions of others, set the appropriate tone for execution, and ensure that the company pays sufficient attention to development and renewal. Direction is management s articulation of where the company is heading and how it will get there. Environment and values help foster a shared understanding of the company s core values and shape the quality of employee interactions. [Pg.319]

I am—and I hope you are—proud of Gardner Stacy s public lectures and his leadership in helping to establish responsible and realistic energy policies for our nation. I hope he and other leaders of the ACS will continue such activities. This is public service at its best, and I hope the Internal Revenue Service recognizes it as such. [Pg.17]
