This form, when properly completed, can be a useful tool to demonstrate management s focus on new employee safety during an OSHA inspection. Many times OSHA will inquire about the safety orientation completion of the form provides documentation. In addition, any warehouse interested in the Voluntary Protection Program (VPP), which is highlighted in Chapter Two, will need a comprehensive new employee orientation program as a part of the VPP application process.

Another area that often needs management attention is employee orientation. In particular, supervisors should provide a formal orientation to employees new to their department. Too often supervisors underestimate the importance of providing clear instruction about safety practices such as proper lifting or cutting techniques in the context of a new employee s job. The ideal orientation should include a new employee orientation checklist and an introduction to the behavioral process to help ensure new employees learn about the hazards in their areas.
