Dilute nonoxiding inorganic and organic acids. Resistance is improved if acids are deaerated. [Pg.411]

Titanium is resistant to dilute sulfuric and hydrochloric acid, most organic acids, most chlorine gas, and chloride solutions. [Pg.76]

Titanium whites resist various atmospheric contaminants such as sulfur dioxide, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. Under normal conditions they are not readily reduced, oxidi2ed, or attacked by weak inorganic and organic acids. Titanium dioxide dissolves slightly in bases, hydrofluoric acid, and hot sulfuric acid. Owing to its chemical inertness, titanium dioxide is a nontoxic, environmentally preferred white pigment. [Pg.7]

The corrosion behavior of tantalum is weU-documented (46). Technically, the excellent corrosion resistance of the metal reflects the chemical properties of the thermal oxide always present on the surface of the metal. This very adherent oxide layer makes tantalum one of the most corrosion-resistant metals to many chemicals at temperatures below 150°C. Tantalum is not attacked by most mineral acids, including aqua regia, perchloric acid, nitric acid, and concentrated sulfuric acid below 175°C. Tantalum is inert to most organic compounds organic acids, alcohols, ketones, esters, and phenols do not attack tantalum. [Pg.331]

Corrosion Resistance. Zirconium is resistant to corrosion by water and steam, mineral acids, strong alkaUes, organic acids, salt solutions, and molten salts (28) (see also Corrosion and corrosion control). This property is attributed to the presence of a dense adherent oxide film which forms at ambient temperatures. Any break in the film reforms instantly and spontaneously in most environments. [Pg.428]

Zirconium is totally resistant to corrosion by organic acids. It has been used in urea-production plants for more than two decades. [Pg.429]

Resist Printing. In resist printing, print pastes are used that can inhibit the development or fixation of different dyes that are apphed to the textile prior to or after printing. These resists can be of a chemical or mechanical nature, or combine both methods. For example, fiber-reactive dyes, which require alkaU for their fixation, can be made resistant by printing a nonvolatile organic acid, such as tartaric acid, on the textile. Colored resists are obtained by printing pigments with a nonvolatile acid. [Pg.373]

Aluminum To 1000 Resists hot petroleum derivatives, gases, footstuffs, many organic acids. [Pg.2475]

Both steel and copper vessels may be lined with thin silver sheets in the same way as for homogeneous lead lining. As silver is extremely resistant to most organic acids at all concentrations and temperatures, it is used widely for handling foodstuffs and pharmaceutical products where nontoxicity and... [Pg.98]

Red and blue acid-resistant bricks are resistant to all inorganic and organic chemicals, except for hydrofluoric acid and hot concentrated caustic alkalis. Acid-resistant fireclay bricks are used for conditions involving elevating temperatures and corrosive condensates. Highly vitrified materials such as chemical stoneware, porcelain and basalts are used for extremely severe duties or where contamination of the process liquors is undesirable. [Pg.103]

Epoxy resin cements are specifically intended for resistance to caustic alkalis and organic solvents, but they also have fair acid resistance. They have excellent bond strength to other materials including ceramic and concrete. The corrosion resistances of the cements described above are given in Table 3.40. [Pg.104]

The plienolic/asbestos laminates (used up to 200°C) have excellent resistance to most mineral and organic acids but are attacked by strong oxidizing agents such as nitric and concentrated sulfuric acids and strong alkalis such as sodium and potassium hydroxide. Tanks, scrubbers, columns, pumps, pipes, etc., are fabricated from plienolic/asbestos laminates. [Pg.120]

Silver has reasonable resistance to inorganic and organic acids (not strongly oxidizing acids), hot alkaline conditions and some fluoride-containing environments. It tarnishes in the presence of sulfides. [Pg.907]
