This receptor shows a remarkable selectivity for Mg2+ over Ca2+ under physiological conditions and has found applications in 19F NMR probes and ratiometric fluorescent sensors based on wavelength shifts.[62] In high concentrations, however, both Ca2+ and Mg2+ can be bound. The similarity of fluorescence enhancements with both ions is the result of essentially identical conformational changes produced upon complexation. Each ion-bound state effectively decouples the amine substituent from the oxybenzene unit, so that PET is similarly suppressed. This means that the charge density difference between the two cations is of secondary importance in these conformationally switchable systems. [Pg.350]

Blackout problem if the instrument does not properly work, it is difficult to observe intermediate states. Very sophisticated instmmentation is needed to measure voltages, currents or logical levels on the boards of the instrument. [Pg.276]

The scientific method is taught starting in elementary school. The first step in the scientific method is to form a hypothesis. A hypothesis is just an educated guess or logical conclusion from known facts. It is then compared against all available data and its details developed. If the hypothesis is found to be consistent with known facts, it is called a theory and usually published. The characteristics most theories have in common are that they explain observed phenomena, predict the results of future experiments, and can be presented in mathematical form. When a theory is found to be always correct for many years, it is eventually referred to as a scientific law. However useful this process is, we often use constructs that do not fit in the scientific method scheme as it is typically described. [Pg.2]

The immediate causes of the TOP event are shown in the fault tree with thek relationship to the TOP event. If any one of the immediate causes results dkecdy in the TOP event, the causes are connected to the TOP event with an OR logic gate. If all the immediate causes are requked for TOP event occurrence, then the causes are connected to the TOP event with an AND logic gate. Each of the immediate causes is then treated in the same manner as the TOP event, and its immediate, necessary, and sufficient causes are determined and shown on the fault tree with the appropriate logic gate. This development continues until all intermediate fault events have been developed into thek basic causes. [Pg.84]

You must execute the Gaussian 94 initialization file included with the program in order to run it. This file sets the values of some environment variables (UNIX) or logical names (VMS) needed by the program. Usually, this file is executed from within your user initialization file (i.e.,. login,. profile, or LOGIN.COM, as appropriate), although you can also run the commands by hand. [Pg.321]

The reason why we find it possible to construct, say, electronic calculators, and indeed why we can perform mental arilhinelie, cannot be found in mathematics or logic. The reason is that the laws of physics happen to permit the existence of physical models for the operations of arithmetic such as addition, subtraction and multiplication. If they did not, these familiar operations would be non-computablo functions. ... [Pg.682]

The flat tire example is pictured using a fault tree logic diagram, shown in Figure 11-12. The circles denote basic events and the rectangles denote intermediate events. The fishlike symbol represents the OR logic function. It means that either of the input events will cause the output state to occur. As shown in Figure 11 -12, the flat tire is caused by either debris on the road or tire failure. Similarly, the tire failure is caused by either a defective tire or a worn tire. [Pg.491]

In difficult situations, it is recommended to install both types of sensors—pressure detector in the vessel and flame detector in the pipe—and they must be switched in an OR-logic to activate the isolation device (see Fig. 23-14). [Pg.21]

Many writers benefit from creating an outline it helps you to see how your points work together, whether there is a flow or logical progression from one point to the next, and if you need more details or other information. [Pg.45]

This modification for Boolean matrix multiplication permits use of the Boolean union operation (logical OR operation or logical sum) instead of regular multiplication and union operations. The Boolean union operation can be executed much faster on a digital computer. Experience has shown that performing the Boolean union of rows instead of the standard Boolean multiplication of matrices can reduce the computation time by as much as a factor of four. [Pg.202]

Once the logic tree structure appears to be consistent, the first of three quality assurance tests is applied by examining the overall logic tree structure for completeness. The logic in each branch of the tree should be tested to determine if it is necessary and sufficient. (Details and tips for testing the logic are discussed in Section 9.6.2.) If the tree appears to be complete, the next quality assurance test is initiated. If the tree is incomplete, then the fact or logic problem is identified and the entire process is repeated. This is called an iterative loop. ... [Pg.199]

Many ideas attributed to Empedocles, as to the development of the universe, including living organisms, are fanciful and would seem to show that he was not a close or logical reasoner, though we must remember that no writing of Empedocles has come down to us, and we are dependent only upon accounts of later authors for what we know of his theories. [Pg.116]
