If long open-hole sections are drilled in areas of high geothermal gradient, thermal destabilization may occur. A diagnostic criterion is if the source of large-scale sloughing is from the shales at the shoe rather than from further downhole. 

An example of the typical safety problem that can occur when completing these wells is when a 6 in. open hole has been drilled below the last casing (or liner) shoe. The open section of the borehole is usually to be cased with a 4 in. liner. The liner is to be lowered into the open hole on a liner hanger that is made up to 3- in. drill pipe. It is assumed that prior to the liner operation, drilling had been under way thus the stripper rubber in the rotating... 

Most squeeze cementing operations take place in cased sections of a well. However, open-hole packers can be used to carry out squeeze cement operations of thief zones during drilling operations.

The fabrication of all trays may be punched or drilled (more expensive) with 1410 holes, and those in the lower section have blank strips placed over the inlet and outlet edge rows until approximately 1223 holes are left open in the top section above the feed tray. 

Certain basic facts must be observed in the manufacture of molds. Flat surfaces should be avoided if possible, because slight domes or dish effects will allow the sheet to stretch over the entire surface. The curved surface prevents the slight bumps that usually may appear in flat sections. Maximum allowable vent hole diameters will vary with materials and sheet thickness. Air evacuation holes should be as small as possible and to minimize restriction of plastic flow through vent holes, the openings should be back drilled mold surface, as reviewed above. 

Horizontal wells can be drilled with a larger well spacing than vertical wells and, like vertical wells, may be completed open or cased hole. Recent innovations such as multibranches and multilegs off of the main section increase the efficiency and productivity of horizontal wells (12, 13). However, new technology is still needed to overcome difficulties associated with the use of horizontal wells, such as effective clean-out...

In the press section the individual rolls are hard or soft covered. The press nip (Fig. 6.7) is created either by two profiled rolls or by a combination of one profiled and one plain roll. Drilling fluids - Coarse, hammermilled (+10 mesh) mica is used in water-based oilwell drilling fluids to prevent fluid loss into porous rock formations. The coarse mica flakes bridge openings and seal porous sections of the drill hole against loss of circulation. Mica s platy nature also aids in the suspension of drilling fluid solids and cuttings.
