Open Fractures

A low strength formation in which open fractures are initiated by too high mud pressure in the borehole... [Pg.59]

Carbonate rocks are more frequently fractured than sandstones. In many cases open fractures in carbonate reservoirs provide high porosity / high permeability path ways for hydrocarbon production. The fractures will be continuously re-charged from the tight (low permeable) rock matrix. During field development, wells need to be planned to intersect as many natural fractures as possible, e.g. by drilling horizontal wells. [Pg.85]

Bone Fractures. A dislocation occurs when sudden pressure or force pulls a bone out of its socket at the joint. This is also known as subluxation. Bone fractures are classified into two categories simple fractures and compound, complex, or open fractures. In the latter the skin is pierced and the flesh and bone are exposed to infection. A bone fracture begins to heal nearly as soon as it occurs. Therefore, it is important for a bone fracture to be set accurately as soon as possible. [Pg.186]

In arid environments, where the soluble products of weathering are not completely removed from the soil, saline solutions may circulate in the soil as well as in rock fractures. If upon evaporation the salt concentration increases above its saturation point, salt crystals form and grow (Goudie et al, 1970). The growth of salt crystals in crevices can force open fractures. Salt weathering occurs in cold or hot deserts or areas where salts accumulate. Boulders, blocks. [Pg.160]

The fourth general stage of development in the caves of Lime Creek was abandonment. Downcutting and piracy of cave streams to lower routes left some of the lower caves near Lime Creek Canyon without significant flow. Presently, these caves take water captured as snow and rain in sinkhole entrances and through open fractures. [Pg.114]

Presumably local pain A closed ankle fracture was converted to an open fracture and open joint by acupuncture Local Likely, but insufficient details reported (51)... [Pg.889]

In Mesozoic sandstones on Tampen Spur and Haltenbanken, normal faults are usually characterized by grain reorientation and enrichment of clay minerals which suggest that ductile deformation dominates. Abundant quartz cement is only observed along these faults associated with stylolites. Open fractures were not present in the sandstones from Tampen Spur and Haltenbanken. Fractures in these sediments therefore normally represent permeability barriers for fluid flow. [Pg.104]

During progressive burial the confining stress increases. This implies that open fractures are unlikely to form unless the sedimentary rock is hydrofractured due to high pore pressures. During uplift and erosion, however, the sediments become over-consolidated as stress is released, and brittle failure may cause open fractures to evolve and persist. [Pg.105]

This model assumes laminar flow between two perfectly smooth and parallel plates. However, Experiments have shown that the real mechanical aperture (E) and the hydraulic conducting aperture (e) are not equal. The cubic law (e = E) is only valid for very open fractures and/or for fractures with smooth fracture surfaces (low JRC). The mechanical aperture E can be converted into the hydraulic conducting aperture e, by using Eq. (2) (Barton et al., 1985) ... [Pg.139]

Fracturing and fault compartmentalization of sandstones fundamentally affects reservoir properties and may significantly influence the fluid migration pathways in a basin (Knipe, 1993). Open fractures may form high-permeability conduits, whereas cement-sealed fractures form barriers to fluid flow. Seismic, petrophysical and reservoir performance data allow regional (field-scale) effects of faulting on fluid flow to be constrained. However, much fracturing and associated cementation may occur at sub-... [Pg.409]
