Ontologies definition

Currently, the included metadata are used to create additional functionality for the reader within an enhanced HTML view of an article. The ontology terms link to pop-up pages with the ontology definitions, further links, and related articles, whereas the compounds bring up a pop-up containing a two-dimensional structure, the InChl, and SMILES strings for the compound, names, synonyms, and related articles. This is best shown in Figure 8.1. [Pg.161]

Inclusion means that if ontology A includes ontology B, the ontological definitions... [Pg.170]

However, even if project partners use the same standard language to represent and exchange product data, its semantics, (i.e. its meaning—c.f. ontology definition in the next section) can be misunderstood when not well captured. [Pg.137]

The GO definition is quite distinct from other meanings of the word. A dictionary defines an ontology as ... [Pg.134]

Also, Varela asserts that to take reproduction into the definition of life would be ontologically wrong (Varela, 2(X)0), as... [Pg.161]

At this point, it is possible to respond to an objection commonly raised against prime matter. One might press the question what is the ontological status of prime matter Is it, for instance, a particular If not, is it a universal Or is it devoid of ontological characteristics Any answer to these questions, it would seem, is problematic. If it is a particular or universal, it must have some definite ontological nature. But this is at odds with its naturelessness. If, on the other hand, it is... [Pg.106]

Project Prospect is at the time of writing the first real application of semantic enhancement to primary research literature. By using open standards such as the InChl and the Open Biomedical Ontologies, the aim was to remove the ambiguity of searching (this remains to be well integrated with the search engines), but the information is now held in a structured form that can make this happen. In this first implementation, the information is used to add a layer of additional information (visualizations and definitions) and identify relationships between our own related HTML articles. [Pg.159]

Fernery s corpuscular definition, albeit speculative, provided an ontology of acids and alkalis independent of their manner of preparation. As such, it could cross the boundaries of different analytic methods and serve as a universal definition. While the proliferation of analytic procedures employing acids and alkalis increasingly removed them from the procedural roots of distillation, chemists could deploy the corpuscular ontology to transplant them to a new analytic environment. The protean points of acids and pores of alkalis made such transposition possible. The corpuscular language also helped Fernery to unpack esoteric chemical practice for the consumption of fashionable Parisians who were drawn to his popular lectures. [Pg.61]

Instead of Descartes, Spinoza might have offered Boerhaave a more attractive approach in the sense that Spinoza made the definition of God central to his philosophy. According to Spinoza the proper order of philosophical argument should start with that which is logically and ontologically prior, namely with the divine essence of nature. Only so could Spinoza rule out contingency in nature and develop a philosophy based on a true solid system, for... [Pg.49]

Happy now, old chaps . .. We can discuss these definitions after the break we now desperately need. One 1 burning question (a Dutch expression) isi What is the ontological meaning of the different levels of overall similarity To what aspect of Nature do they correspond We meet again after lunch. Thank you, again, very much. [Pg.125]
