The progressive ordering from the surface to the center has been experimentally observed in the case of the electron irradiation-induced formation of the quasi-spherical onion-like particles[25]. Many combinations of crop and intercrop can be used, but the guiding rule must always be that the intercrop should not be allowed to thrive at the expense of the main crop and must be harvested before the slower crop needs the space. APase in onion roots. Enzyme activity was mainly extracellular with the heaviest concentration in corner spaces between the epidermal and hypo-dermal layers. He suggested the possibility of a subcutaneous pore through which the enzyme could be released to the root surface. Bieleski and co-workers (Reid Bieleski, 1970 Bieleski Johnson, 1972) studied the psi induction and location of APase in duckweed (Spirodela oligorrhiza). APase in control plants was located primarily in and around the vascular strands. In P-deficient plants psi-APase activity was 10-20 times the control value. Enzyme activity was primarily located in the epidermis of the root and undersurface of the frond, the tissue locations most likely to provide access to phosphate esters in the medium. These workers further demonstrated that hydrolysis of organic phosphates occurred in the external medium and/or the apoplast followed by Pi uptake into the cell. [Pg.28]

This important flavor compound was identified in the head-space volatiles of beef broth by Brinkman, et al. (43) and although it has the odor of fresh onions, it is believed to contribute to the flavor of meat. This compound can be formed quite easily from Strecker degradation products. Schutte and Koenders (49) concluded that the most probable precursors for its formation were etha-nal, methanethiol and hydrogen sulfide. As shown in Figure 5, these immediate precursors are generated from alanine, methionine and cysteine in the presence of a Strecker degradation dicarbonyl compound such as pyruvaldehyde. These same precursors could also interact under similar conditions to give dimethyl disulfide and 3,5-dimethyl-l,2,4-trithiolane previously discussed. [Pg.178]

At high shear rates in some systems, the onions become large and very monodisperse in size, and they then order into a macrocrystalline packing. At rest, it is clear that the onions are not spherical, but polyhedral, because they must fill space. In the perfectly ordered macrocrystalline state, the typical shape of the space-filling onions appears to be that of the Kelvin tetrakaidecahedron, which is a model structure for liquid foams (see Section 9.5.1). Include soil-improving crops. Leave room for soil-builders such as buckwheat, rye, or oats. With a little more space, you can grow clover or alfalfa, which remains in place for more than one year, enriching the soil and attracting beneficial insects. Sod crops, such as lawns, cover crops, or even weeds that are intact for several years, however, may harbor soil pests such as grubs or wireworms, which can damage root crops.
