Chum salmon, Oncorhynchus keta Eggs were exposed in freshwater to 4 pg Ag/L tor 14 days prior to hatch. After hatching, larvae were exposed to 4 pg Ag/L in salt water tor 14 days during yolk-sac resorption. Fry were then transferred to uncontaminated salt water and fed a high metals diet tor 64 days (diet contained — in pg metal/kg feed DW — 2 Ag, 255 Cd, 6670 Cu, 1320 Pb, and 96,000 Zn)... [Pg.561]

Otolin-1 is a collagen-like protein associated with calcium carbonate in otoliths it was isolated from otoliths of the chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta. Otoliths are small pieces of calcium carbonate, mainly aragonite, located in the inner ear of vertebrates but also in many invertebrates. Very sensitive to gravity and linear acceleration, otoliths play an important role in the balance of the organism . Otoliths from Osteichthyes are constituted by layers of aragonite, the accretion rate of which varies with the age of the fish hence, by studying otoliths it is possible to determine the age of a fish (Kimura and Anderl, 2005). The structure of otolin-1 is not yet completely determined (Murayama et al., 2002, 2005). [Pg.898]
