All of the studies described above dealt only with saturated fatty-acid acrylic monomers except for brief reports on the preparation of oleyl methacrylate [115,116]. 

An example of the first type is the emulsion stabiliser as exemplified by sodium oleyl sulphate, cetyl pyridinium chloride and poly(ethylene oxide) derivatives. For a number of applications it is desirable that the latex be thickened before use, in which case thickening agents such as water-soluble cellulose ethers or certain alginates or methacrylates may be employed. Antifoams such as silicone oils are occasionally required.

To a flask with a condenser is added 492 gm of water and 20 gm of poly(vinyl alcohol) (100%). The mixture is stirred until the poly(vinyl alcohol) dissolves. Then 6 gm of Nonion E230 [polyoxyethylene (30) oleyl ether from Nippon Oils Fats Co., Ltd.] and 2.0 gm of calcium carbonate are added and stirred in order to dissolve them and then the solution purged with nitrogen for 5 min. The flask is heated to 65 C, and 40 gm of vinyl acetate and 40 gm of 2.5% potassium persulfate are added. The temperature is raised to 75 1°C, and the reaction allowed to proceed for 1 hr. Then 270 gm of vinyl acetate and 30 gm of 2.5% potassium persulfate (aqueous solution) are added to the flask separately (using two dropping funnels) over a 3-hr period at 75° 1°C. A solution of 70 gm vinyl acetate and 20 gm glycidyl methacrylate is then added dr op wise while 11 parts 2.5%... 

The anti-wear additive has at least two components, i.e., a phosphate ester and an amine phosphate. The antioxidant is an aryl amine. The anti-rust additive is an amide carboxylate. The metal passivator is preferably a amine phosphate. The demulsifier is a low molecular weight extreme pressure or EO-PO pol5rmer. The defoamant is a two component system consisting of poly(siloxane) and poly(methyl methacrylate). In addition, an oleyl phosphate as anti-wear friction reducer can be added. Preferably the additives should have low levels or zero levels of metal and sulfur (10).
