Owing to their improved stability towards hydrolysis and oxidation, dimer diol polyethers (and dimer diol polycarbonates) are used as soft segments in the preparation of thermoplastic polyurethanes. Polyurethanes prepared from such oleo-chemical building blocks are very hydrophobic and show the expected stability. 

A further example of process quality monitoring and reactor batch profiling using NIRS comes with oleo-chemical and biodiesel production. An established use of FT-NIR analysis (AOCS Method Cd le 01) is the determination of the key vegetable oil processing parameters - iodine value (IV) and percentage trans fat content (%Trans) (Figure 5.38). 

A series which presents the current state of the art in chosen areas of oils and fats chemistiy, including its relevance to the food and pharmaceutical industries. Written at professional and reference level, it is directed at chemists and technologists working in oils and fats processing, the food industry, the oleo-chemicals industry and the pharmaceutical industry, at analytical chemists and quality assurance personnel, and at lipid chemists in academic research laboratories. Each volume in the series provides an accessible source of information on the science and technology of a particular area. 

Fatty acid methyl esters play a major role in the oleochemical industry. Methyl esters have increasingly replaced fatty acids as starting materials for many oleo-chemicals. They are used as chemical intermediates for a number of oleochemicals, such as fatty alcohols, alkanolamides, a-sulfonated methyl esters, and many more. One other potential use of methyl esters is as a substitute for diesel oil (14). Methyl esters are clean burning with no sulfur dioxide emission. Although the heat of combustion is shghtly lower, there is no engine adjustment necessary and there is no loss in efficiency. 

In general, crude fish oils and animal fats cannot be used directly to produce oleo-chemical compounds they must first be refined or further processed. Free fatty acids are usually thought of as impurities in commercially available rendered fats. Consequently, manufacturers of purer grades of tallow will refine tallow and other fats by adding a caustic material compound such as sodium hydroxide to form soaps of fatty acids, which are washed out with water. 

The crystallization and solidification properties of lipids are important physical attributes that influence the functional properties of lipids in biological systems, foods, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, and oleo chemicals. A basic understanding of lipid crystallization and solidification is fundamental to understanding and optimizing products or systems containing lipids. 

In February 1997, Unilever resolved to sell subsidiaries it had acquired over the years to provide materials used in the production of its end-products. The package comprised four units Crosfields, a competitor purchased in 1919 that became a specialist in silicon- and aluminum-based compounds National Starch, a turn-of-the-century U.S. merger, which, when bought in 1978, was the world s largest producer of industrial adhesives and two Dutch acquisitions, Unichema, the world s leader in oleo chemicals, and Quest, a leading fragrance and food-ingredient supplier. (These businesses accounted for Unilever s revenue of 1.8 billion in 1993 as listed in Table 1.1).

There is one notable exception to this general pattern. Medium-chain fatty acids In the range of C.. to C.. - an important raw material to the oleo-chemical industry - are availaDie from but a few oil crops, especially from coconut oil. Since the large majority of this oil Is coming from the Philippines, the price of these "laurlcs" is highly dependent on events in this country, e.g, its annual harvest.
