Oil mist system

Oil mist systems exist to provide eontinuous minute quantities of oil fog to the rolling assembly. These systems normally employ an additional pump, atomizer, and filter. These systems are gaining popularity in hot applieations, or with heaty thrust and radial loading. The oil fog is sprayed into the bearing ehamber with either a wet sump or a dry sump. The wet sump method provides the bearings with a bath (the liquiei oil level) and a fog spray. See Figure 11-1. [Pg.159]

Although not widely used for gears, oil-mist lubrication is nevertheless worth mentioning here. It is a total loss technique in which the oil is supplied in the form of fine droplets carried by compressed air. Two virtues are that the lubricant can be carried long distances through pipes without severe frictional losses, and that no oil pumps are needed since the motive power is provided by factory compressed-air lines. All exhaust from a mechanical pump should be vented to a fume hood regardless of the room s ventilation quality or the type of pumped gases. Each time you bring new samples into vacuum conditions, your system is pumping at atmospheric pressured Because pump oils have low vapor pressures, and pump oils themselves are considered nontoxic, there is little concern for breathing pump oil mist. However, there may be dangers from trapped vapors within the pump oils. Regardless, there is little reason to breathe the pump oil mist if it can be avoided. Check with the manufacturer or distributor of your pump for an oil mist filter for your pump. Gastric emptying by either lavage or vomiting is contraindicated since there is a danger of pulmonary aspiration and subsequent pneumonitis.
