Its conclusion that tetraethyl lead was not an environmental toxin came under sharp attack from public health advocates and independent scientists. Sayers and Emery Hayhurst of the Ohio Department of Health fought back, using their positions as public employees to defend the safety of leaded gasoline in professional forums and before the public.
