By convention, this is provided by the belt manufacturer per 25 mm of belt width, at different speeds of the faster shaft (smaller pulley) for different recommended widths of belts, number of plies and type and grade of duck, etc. We show Type I and Type II in Table 8.1 for a general illustration. These ratings may vary marginally from one manufacturer to another, depending upon their product mix and quality of curing.

Reproductive impairment was reported in several species of waterfowl from a marsh treated with 1.12 kg technical chlordane/ha (Table 13.4). Studies by Lundholm (1988) with two species of ducks (Anas spp.) and the domestic chicken (Gallus sp.) demonstrated that various organochlorine compounds, including chlordane, interfered (in a dose-dependent manner) with reproduction by reducing the binding of progesterone to its cytoplasmic receptor in the shell gland mucosa of birds, especially ducks.

The nutritional requirements of ducks and geese have not been established exactly therefore, some of the formulation specifications have been extrapolated from chicken data. In general, the ME values of feed ingredients for ducks are similar to those for poultry except that they are about 5% higher in ducks for fibrous feedstuffs.

In many areas of the Orient, duck and rice production are linked. Over several generations, native ducks have been selected for their ability to obtain most of their feed requirements from the levees, swamps and waterways associated with wetland rice production. The ducks may also feed on the broken rice left in harvest fields. In some of the rural areas a flock of ducks may be a major source of income. In Indonesia the Alabio and Bali breeds are common while in China the native Maya is used. 

There are a number of duck breeds considered multi-purpose in that they produce a large number of eggs but also have a meatier carcass than most egg-laying breeds. These include the Aylesbury, Cayuga and the Maya (China). 

It is important to choose a breed of duck that best suits particular needs and resources. For example, the Nagoya and Mikaw are local breeds available...
