Obtaining and maintaining involvement

You cannot ejfectively put to use the principles in this book without ongoing support from both managers and employees. This chapter focuses on ways to initiate and maintain that support, including ways to promote leadership, build commitment and involvement, expand the scope of interventions, reduce active resistance, and sustain momentum.

These findings bring to mind the discussion of "choice" in Chapter 16 and the results of my manipulations of students opportunity to choose stimulus materials in the laboratory and reading assignments in the classroom. The implications are critical for obtaining and maintaining involvement in a safety process. 

Water solubility and stability in aqueous solutions and water-based cosmetic formulations is an indispensable requisite for protein derivatives, not only to obtain and maintain transparent preparations, but also because most of the expected cosmetic effects are possible only when the interacting species involved are solvated in an aqueous environment. The techniques and procedures adopted to obtain soluble derivatives (hydrolysis, complex-ation, etc.) have been described in the preceding sections. 

Controlled Atmosphere Storage. Use of controlled atmosphere (CA), an atmosphere containing more CO2 and less O2 than air, to maintain the quality of citrus during storage has generally been no more effective than cold storage in air. Several reviews of the subject published previously cover results of some of the earlier work (1, 207, 236, 237, 267, 268, 269). Various results have been obtained and indicate that factors other than O2 and CO2 concentrations, such as variety, maturity and humidity may be involved. Decay is often enhanced with certain CA storage conditions (268, 270, 271, 272), disorders of the rind may be increased (209, 270, 271, 273) and off-flavors may develop (271,... 

The waste classification system should be developed in recognition of the types of information that are available and likely to be obtainable, and it should be specified to maximize compatibility with available information consistent with maintaining the fundamental integrity of the system. Establishment of a risk-based waste classification system must begin with the existing classification systems and associated databases (e.g., toxicity of hazardous substances). These would be expanded and refined as needed. However, if the foundations of a risk-based waste classification system or its implementation involve radically new concepts or call for data that cannot feasibly be obtained, the effort will be for naught. A realistic waste classification system must use the existing base of concepts and data to achieve the desired result.
