Studies show that children are getting heavier as time goes on. A comparison of childhood obesity studies completed in 1961 against similar studies completed today revealed that the incidence of childhood obesity has doubled. This trend exposes an ever-increasing number of children both to the societal impacts of being overweight and to a number of... [Pg.14]

According to a 2001 report from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), about half of American adults are overweight or obese. That same trend was found in Australia, according to a 2001 report from Euromonitor International, a market research business. [Pg.158]

Given the current widespread interest in reducing cancer, obesity, and other maladies, there is considerable interest in the use of the CLAs, either as a mixture or in the form of individual isomers, as beneficial dietary adjuncts. Cow s milk, beef tallow, and products made from them are natural sources of CLA. However, CLA is also readily synthesized in high yield in the laboratory from vegetable oils that are rich in linoleic acid, such as sunflower and safflower. The resulting synthetic product has CLA levels of about 80%, not the 0.3-0.5% (fat basis) found in beef tallow and dairy products (176). As a result, except for studies of the specific effects of foods containing CLA, vegetable oil is the typical source of CLA in contemporary studies and in commercial dietary supplements. This trend will probably continue. [Pg.248]

A study of 57 obese women illustrates the use of CT for measuring subcutaneous fat and visceral fat, and the use of the data for predicting adverse risks to health (Zamboni et al 1992), Forty of the women were premenopausal (24-46 years old), while 17 were postmenopausal (52-66 years old). The results (Table 7,1) revealed that the younger obese women tended to have more subcutaneous fat and less visceral fat than the older obese women. The units of area that are used in CT are cm. The data suggest a trend in the aging process of obese women, where there occurs a progressive increase in visceral fat and a reduction in subcutaneous fat-... [Pg.397]
