Rimonabant is an inverse agonist for the cannabi-noid receptor CBl. In 2006 rimonabant was approved in the European Union as an anti-obesity drug. The use of rimonabant after one year produces a modest weight loss of approximately 5%. However there are serious concerns over suicidality, depression and other related side effects associated with use of the drug. In Europe, rimonabant is now contraindicated for patients with severe depression. [Pg.485]

Tetrahydrolipstatin is a lipase inhibitor developed and marketed by Roche (Basel, Switzerland) as an anti-obesity drug. With the incidence of obesity rising rapidly in the industrialized nations, having reached 33% of all adults in the United States and more than a quarter of all French schoolchildren, this problem will rapidly cease to remain one of lifestyle and enter the arena of medical costs associated with the diseases stemming from obesity. [Pg.407]

Media reports about the diet pill combinations focused on the promise of weight loss. The public embraced the message, ignoring the fact that these pills were anti-obesity drugs to be used for only several weeks. [Pg.156]

This compound was an intermediate in the synthesis of the potential anti-obesity drug ICI-D7114 you met at the beginning of the chapter. You can spot that, with two ethers and an amine functional group, it requires several disconnections to take it back to simple compounds. The question is which do we do first One way to solve the problem is to write down all the possibilities and see which looks best. Here there are four reasonable disconnections one at each of the ether groups (a and b) or on either side of the amine (c and d),... [Pg.776]

There is no entirely satisfactory drug treatment for obesity, and it is normally recommended that moderately overweight patients (BMI <30) are treated with diet and exercise alone. Some existing anti-obesity drugs are given in Table 3.2. [Pg.63]
