Complete removal of procyanidin is not necessary to overcome anti-nutritional effects. Removal of most procyanidin or addition of sufficient protein will overcome anti-nutritional effects of procyanidins. Small concentrations of procyanidin can be easily overcome by adding protein.

Alcohol indirectly affects hematopoiesis through metabolic and nutritional effects and may also directly inhibit the proliferation of all cellular elements in bone marrow. The most common hematologic disorder seen in chronic drinkers is mild anemia resulting from alcohol-related folic acid deficiency. Iron deficiency anemia may result from gastrointestinal bleeding. Alcohol has also been implicated as a cause of several hemolytic syndromes, some of which are associated with hyperlipidemia and severe liver disease. 

Not all of the various chemical forms of chromium are effective in improving sugar metabolism, and the exact nature of the compound or compounds involved in activating insulin is not established. Some of the chromium in plants may not be present in nutritionally effective forms. Il has not been established that chromium is essential to plants, but high concentrations of the metal are toxic. Most agricultural crops, especially their seeds, contain only low levels of chromium.

Many nutritional effects on xenobiotic metabolism have been noted, but the information is scattered and often appears contradictory. This is one of the most important of several neglected areas of toxicology. This section is concerned only with the effects of nutritional constituents of the diet the effects of other xenobiotics in the diet are discussed under chemical effects (see Section 9.5).
