The metabolism of cinnamate and w-phenylalkane carboxylates has been studied in Rhodopseudomonaspalustris (Elder et al. 1992), and for growth with the higher homologs additional CO2 was necessary. The key degradative reaction was ()-oxidation, for compounds with chain lengths of three, five, and seven carbon atoms, benzoate was formed and further metabolized, but for the even-numbered compounds with four, six, and eight carbon atoms phenylacetate was a terminal metabolite.

The mineral-based oils are produced from heavy-end crude oil distillates. Distillate sneams may be treated in several ways, such as vacuum-, solvent-, acid-, or hydrotreated, to produce oils with commercial properties. Hydrocarbon types ranging from C15 to C50 are found in the various types of oils, with the heavier distillates having higher percentages of the higher-carbon-number compounds. 

The process of catalytic reforming is utilized for the production of high-octane-number compounds from lower-octane-number fractions. It is an endothermic process which requires heat and a catalyst in order to maintain a constant reaction rate. Hydrogen is also produced in significant quantities through the reforming process.

Many alcohols are prepared by reduction of the corresponding methyl esters which are derived from animal or vegetable fats, These alcohols are straight chain even-carbon-numbered compounds. Tallow and coconut oil are two major raw materials for higher alcohol manufacture. 

Furthermore, considering the results of this compositional study in conjunction with the results of the preparations of the coal liquids, 1) liquids from lower-rank coals were more easily upgraded, 2) for a given raw coal liquid, increased severity of upgrading produced larger amounts of low-ring-number compound types, and 3) coal rank alone could not account for the observed variations in complexity of the coal liquids.
