NON-CONVENTIONAL

The efficiency of gas turbines is limited by the maximum allowable turbine inlet temperature (TIT). The TIT may be increased by cooling of the blades and vanes of the high pressure turbine. Cooling channels can be casted into the components or may be drilled afterwards. Non-conventional processes like EDM, ECD or Laser are used for drilling. Radiographic examination of the drilled components is part of the inspection procedure. Traditional X-Ray film technique has been used. The consumable costs, the waste disposal and the limited capacity of the two film units lead to the decision to investigate the alternative of Real-Time X-Ray. 

Sulfite waste Hquor from the pulping industry contains a large amount of hydrolyzed sugars. Some sulfite waste Hquors are now being fermented to give both ethanol (qv) and single-cell protein in the form of yeast (see Foods, non-CONVENTIONAL Yeasts).

One of the driving forces for so-called non-conventional applications is water usage is becoming a prime concern for many areas of the country. Impact fees for new operations and high sewer costs are common in the southern United States. 

Non-conventional gas is natural gas found in unusual underground conditions, such as very impermeable reservoirs which require massive stimulation in order to be recovered, or in underground occurrences of gas hydrates, or dissolved in formation water, or coal-bed methane, or gas from in-situ gasification of coal. 

However, the laws and regulatory programmes regarding water quality cope with most of the problems and legislation generally protects the population in developed countries, even when scarcity forces the use of non-conventional water resources. Outbreaks of water-borne diseases in these countries are more linked to intense rainfall events, mostly to those that follow drought periods, rather than to drought itself [1 ]. 

Regulating the use of non-conventional water resources and speeding up modifications according to changing knowledge and circumstances.
