Nomex®

Fig. 6, aB-scan of a 15 mm thick sandwich with Nomex cores and GFRP-skins, shows clearly the depth of the two defects in the core [4]. A HILL-SCAN 3010 board and a broadband probe (0,8 to 3 MHz) were used. In regions without defects, the backwall-echo is indicated. [Pg.859]

Nomex is another aramid fiber Kevlar and Nomex differ only in that the substitution pattern in the aromatic rings is para in Kevlar but meta in Nomex Nomex is best known for its fire resistant properties and is used in protective clothing for fire fighters astronauts and race car drivers... [Pg.868]

The thermal protection system of the space shutde is composed mainly of subliming or melting ablators that are used below their fusion or vaporization reaction temperatures (42). In addition to the carbon-carbon systems discussed above, a flexible reusable surface insulation composed of Nomex felt substrate, a Du Pont polyamide fiber material, is used on a large portion of the upper surface. High and low temperature reusable surface insulation composed of siHca-based low density tiles are used on the bottom surface of the vehicle, which sees a more severe reentry heating environment than does the upper surface of the vehicle (43). [Pg.5]

Rigid-rod polymers are often Hquid crystalline polymers classified as lyotropic, such as the aramids Nomex and Kevlar, or thermotropic Hquid crystalline polymers, such as Vectran. [Pg.64]

Mackey and Weil also list specific NR-P formulas for adhesives for printed circuits, leather-to-leather, bonding steel plates, and Nomex paper ([210], Tables 8 and 19, p. 219). The formula in Table 10, for a general structural adhesive, is also from Mackey and Weil ([210], Table 22, p. 219). [Pg.930]

Operating conditions are important determinants of the choice of fabric. Some fabrics (e.g., polyolefins, nylons, acrylics, polyesters) are useful only at relatively low temperatures of 95 to 150°C (200 to 300°F). For high-temperature flue gas streams, more thermally stable fabrics such as fiberglass. Teflon, or Nomex must be used. [Pg.408]

Pollutant Loading Typical inlet concentrations to cartridge collectors are 1 to 23 grams per cubic meter (g/m ) (0.5 to 10 grains per cubic foot (gr/ft )). Cartridge filters, which utilize synthetic, nonwoven media such as needle punched felts fabricated of polyester or Nomex, are able to handle inlet concentrations up to 57 g/m (25 gr/ft ). [Pg.413]

Indicate, if known, preferred bag material that will withstand environment, e.g., fibers of glass, polyester, Teflon , Nomex , polypropylene, polyethylene, cotton, wool, nylon, Orion , Dacron , and Dynel . The type of weave of fiber should be recommended by the manufacturer. The fabrics may be felted or woven [47,48] in weaves of plain, satin, or twill, and should be resistant to any corrosive material in the solid particles or the gas stream. [Pg.273]

Nomex, a polyamide used in such applications as fire-retardant clothing, is prepared by reaction of 1,3-bcnzenediamine with 1,3-benzenedicarbonyl chloride. Show the structure of Nomex. [Pg.1222]

The diaminobenzenes are made from benzene by a combination chlorination-nitration route although para-phenylene diamine is also made directly from aniline. orr/to-Phenylene diamine is widely used for the preparation of biologically active compounds such as fungicides and veterinarian medicines. The mera-diamine is used in fire-retardant textile fibers ( Nomex ) while the / ara-diamine finds use in high-strength textile fibers used for bullet-proof vests, sails, army helmets, and other types of fiber-reinforced plastics ( Kevlar ). [Pg.89]

Up to three of the hydrogens on a benzene ring can be replaced with a nitro (-NO2) group by reaction of nitric acid in sulfuric acid. When two hydrogens are replaced by nitro in this manner (dinitration), one isomer, the meta- or 1,3-, predominates. When three hydrogens are replaced (trinitration), the predominant isomer is the 1,3,5-isomer mera-dinitrobenzene is made by this method as a starting material for mera-phenylenediamine, one of the components in the manufacture of a heat-resistant nylon sold in the U.S. as Nomex by DuPont. [Pg.143]
