Nomenclature alkyl

Section 4.2 Alcohols and alkyl halides may be named using either substitutive or functional class lUPAC nomenclature. In substitutive nomenclature alkyl halides are named as halogen derivatives of alkanes. The parent is the longest continuous chain that bears the halogen substituent, and in the absence of other substituents the chain is numbered from the direction that gives the lower number to the carbon that... [Pg.174]

An alkyl group lacks one of the hydrogens of an alkane A methyl group (CH3 —) is an alkyl group derived from methane (CH4) Unbranched alkyl groups m which the point of attachment is at the end of the chain are named m lUPAC nomenclature by replac mg the ane endings of Table 2 2 by yl... [Pg.73]

Tabular summaries of the lUPAC rules for alkane and alkyl group nomenclature appear on pages 96-98... [Pg.77]

While developing the connections between structure reaction and mechanism we will also extend the fundamentals of lUPAC nomenclature to functional group families beginning with alcohols and alkyl halides... [Pg.142]

The lUPAC rules permit alkyl halides to be named m two different ways called func twnal class nomenclature and substitutive nomenclature In functional class nomencla ture the alkyl group and the halide (fluoride chloride bromide or iodide) are desig nated as separate words The alkyl group is named on the basis of its longest continuous chain beginning at the carbon to which the halogen is attached... [Pg.144]

Substitutive nomenclature of alkyl halides treats the halogen as a halo—(fluoro chloro bromo or lodo ) substituent on an alkane chain The carbon chain is numbered m the direction that gives the substituted carbon the lower number... [Pg.144]

Ethers are named m substitutive lUPAC nomenclature as alkoxy derivatives of alkanes Functional class lUPAC names of ethers are derived by listing the two alkyl groups m the general structure ROR m alphabetical order as separate words and then adding the word ether at the end When both alkyl groups are the same the prefix di precedes the name of the alkyl group... [Pg.665]

Section 16 1 Ethers are compounds that contain a C—O—C linkage In substitutive lUPAC nomenclature they are named as al/coxy derivatives of alkanes In functional class lUPAC nomenclature we name each alkyl group as a separate word (m alphabetical order) followed by the word ether... [Pg.691]

Alkylamines are named m two ways One method adds the ending amine to the name of the alkyl group The other applies the principles of sub stitutive nomenclature by replacing the e ending of an alkane name by amine and uses appropriate locants to identify the position of the ammo group Arylammes are named as derivatives of aniline... [Pg.955]

The general formula for boric acid esters is B(OR)2. The lower molecular weight esters such as methyl, ethyl, and phenyl are most commonly referred to as methyl borate [121 -43-7] ethyl borate [130-46-9J, and phenyl borate [1095-03-0] respectively. Some of the most common boric acid esters used in industrial appHcations are Hsted in Table 1. The nomenclature in the boric acid ester series can be confusing. The lUPAC committee on boron chemistry has suggested using trialkoxy- and triaryloxyboranes (5) for compounds usually referred to as boric acid esters, trialkyl (or aryl) borates, trialkyl (or aryl) orthoborates, alkyl (or aryl) borates, alkyl (or aryl) orthoborates, and in the older Hterature as boron alkoxides and aryloxides. CycHc boric acid esters, which are trimeric derivatives of metaboric acid (HBO2), are known as boroxines (1). [Pg.213]

Tetrazolin-5-one, l-arylsulfonyl-4-butyl-polymerization, 5, 838 Tetrazolin-5-one, 1-methyl-methylation, 5, 819 Tetrazolin-5-ones 1,4-disubs tituted synthesis, 5, 831 1-substituted alkylation, 5, 794 tautomerism, 5, 794 Tetrazolinyl radicals, 5, 801 1,2,3,4-Tetrazolium-5-aminide nomenclature, 1, 35... [Pg.856]

Both common and systematic names of compounds are used throughout this volume, depending on which the Editor-in-Chief feels is most appropriate. Preparations appear in the alphabetical order of names of the compound or names of the synthetic procedures. The Chemical Abstracts indexing name for each title compound, if it differs from the title name, is given as a subtitle. Because of the major shift to new systematic nomenclature adopted by Chemical Abstracts in 1972, many common names used in the text are immediately followed by the bracketed, new names. Whenever two names are concurrently in use, the carre CChemical Abstracts name is adopted. The prefix n- is deleted from -alkanes and w-alkyls. All reported dimensions are now expressed in S st me International units. [Pg.126]

A single alkane may have several different names a name may be a common nfflne, or it may be a systematic name developed by a well-defined set of rules. The most widely used system is lUPAC nomenclature. Table 2.6 summarizes the rules for alkanes and cycloalkanes. Table 2.7 gives the r-ules for naming alkyl groups. [Pg.96]
