Fatigue of Glass-Fiber Reinforced Plastics (GRP). NOL rings of 6-inch outer diameter and 0.25-inch width were fabricated from 12 single... [Pg.484]

NOL ring The NOL ring is a parallel filament-or tape-wound hoop test specimen used in filament winding and developed by the Naval Ordinance Laboratory (NOL), now Naval Surface Weapons Laboratory, for measuring various mechanical strength properties, such as tension and compression, of the reinforced fiber material. The specimen is wound so that the fibers are in the circumferential direction. [Pg.368]

Split-Disk Method n (NOL ring test) A method of testing the tensile strength of tubular plastics and reinforced plastics embodied in ASTM D 2290. [Pg.691]

An old name for benzene was phene and its hydroxyl derivative came to be called phe nol This like many other entrenched common names is an acceptable lUPAC name Likewise o m and p cresol are acceptable names for the various ring substituted hydroxyl derivatives of toluene More highly substituted compounds are named as deriv atives of phenol Numbering of the ring begins at the hydroxyl substituted carbon and proceeds m the direction that gives the lower number to the next substituted carbon Sub stituents are cited m alphabetical order... [Pg.993]

Fnedel-Crafts alkylation Alcohols in combination with acids serve as sources of carbocations Attack of a carbocation on the electron rich ring of a phe nol brings about its alkylation... [Pg.1003]

Reaction with arenediazonium salts Adding a phe nol to a solution of a diazonium salt formed from a primary aromatic amine leads to formation of an azo compound The reaction is carried out at a pH such that a significant portion of the phenol is pres ent as its phenoxide ion The diazonium ion acts as an electrophile toward the strongly activated ring of the phenoxide ion... [Pg.1004]

The second step is the condensation reaction between the methylolphe-nols with the elimination of water and the formation of the polymer. Crosslinking occurs hy a reaction between the methylol groups and results in the formation of ether bridges. It occurs also by the reaction of the methylol groups and the aromatic ring, which forms methylene bridges. The formed polymer is a three-dimensional network thermoset ... [Pg.347]

A sequential process of carbopalladation and ring expansion of allenylcyclobuta-nols provides five-membered rings (Scheme 16.19) [24], The intramolecular version of this approach offers a facile synthetic method for 5,7- and 5,8-fused ring frameworks (Scheme 16.20) [24]. [Pg.932]

Padwa has reported an approach to the ring system of the ribasine alkaloids 98 [174], using an intramolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of the a-diazo ketone 99 to produce the pentacyclic skeleton 100 (Scheme 19.17). Wood [175] used an intermolecular 1,3-dipolar cycloaddition of a carbonyl ylide for the total synthesis of ( )-epoxysorbicilli-nol 101 (Scheme 19.18). The key cycloaddition in this approach is the conversion of 102 to the natural product core 103, which sets the substitution pattern around the entire ring system in a single step. [Pg.449]
