One problem associated with the nitroglycerin patch is that continuous nitroglycerin administration will cause drug tolerance, thus reducing the antianginal effectiveness of this medication.8,33 The exact rea-... [Pg.309]

Nitroglycerin (NTC) is distinguished by a high membrane penetrability and very low stability. It is the drug of choice in the treatment of angina pectoris attacks. For this purpose, it is administered as a spray, or in sublingual or buccal tablets for transmucosal delivery. The onset of action is between 1 and 3 minutes. Due to a nearly complete presystemic elimination, it is poorly suited for oral administration. Transdermal delivery (nitroglycerin patch) also avoids presystemic elimination. [Pg.124]

A 62-year-old Chinese man is to be started on rifampin for treatment of his latent TB infection. His PMH is significant for HTN, CAD, and hypercholesterolemia. His current medications include metoprolol, diltiazem, aspirin, pravastatin, and nitroglycerin patches. Which of his current medications will most likely interact with rifampin ... [Pg.134]

Like dinretics, therapy should be initiated at low doses in order to avoid hypotension. Isosorbide dinitrate 10 mg three or fonr times daily, isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur) 30 mg/day, nitroglycerin paste 1 /2 to 1 inch every 4 to 6 honrs, and nitroglycerin patch 0.1 to 0.2 mg/h applied each day are common initial doses. Doses can be increased during long-term therapy and titrated against symptoms. Nitrate tolerance has not been studied in this patient population but probably occurs. Similar to diuretics, nitrates can cause hypotension and a low-output syndrome. Headaches are common but may be less frequent with continued use. [Pg.363]

The client receiving a nitroglycerin patch who has a blood pressure of 148/92. [Pg.37]

The nitroglycerin patch should be held if the client s blood pressure is less than 90/60 because it is above that, the nurse should not question administering this medication. [Pg.53]
