Nitroglycerin, analysis

If chloride is present, saturated aqueous silver acetate solution should be added in amounts slightly more than the calculated quantity prior t o the addition of concentrated sulphuric acid. The procedure may be applied to the routine analysis of mixtures of nitric and sulphuric acids, and to the determination of nitrogen in esters such as nitroglycerine and nitrocellulose the latter are easily hydrolysed by strong sulphuric acid after dispersal in glacial acetic acid. [Pg.637]

Great care must be exercised in the thermal analysis of certain sulfoxide complexes. Complexes of the type [Md SOl XX], (X = C104, N03, etc.) are known to be highly explosive on heating to elevated temperatures indeed, sulfoxide complexes with explosive properties equal to TNT and nitroglycerine have been reported in the patent literature (148,149). [Pg.144]

The foregning gives a method by which the proportions of the gylcol compounds in admixture with Nitroglycerin or Nitroglycerin and Nitropolyglycerin may be determined with a fair degres of accuracy when the pure components only are present. As such it is particularly applicable to the analysis of nitrated mixtures in plant operation... [Pg.142]

More in line with the predictive use of hazards analysis, however, is the experimental and theoretical assessment that the viscosity of the liquid significantly affects this mode of initiation. Such information allows redesign of the process to eliminate handling of low viscosity liquid explosives, and quantitative measurement of the sensitivity of the system to mild shocks as a function of viscosity may allow the optimum level to be selected. This is not necessarily a new concept, only quantified in a different manner. Thirty years ago transporters of neat nitroglycerine in the oil fields were paid 25 a day. The stipend for transporting jellied nitroglycerine was seven dollars, a practical comment on the understood difference in hazard. [Pg.307]

To decide whether a given mixture is suitable for filling shells or for producing non-freezing dynamites. Thermal analysis of the components of mixtures in practical use, e.g. nitroglycerine and centralite, fulfils a similar, practical aim by explaining the interaction of these substances, in particular whether they form simple eutectics, molecular compounds or solid solutions. [Pg.256]

The increasing use of explosives in mining greatly increased coal output but numerous gas explosions occurred in mines where blackpowder was used. The development of nitroglycerine and more modern explosive compositions did not eliminate this hazard. As thejndustry developed and the demand for coal increased the safety of explosives used in mines become-so urgent and important a problem that in the nineteenth century many countries set up special commissions charged with its detailed analysis. [Pg.396]

The same MEKC system was also used for the separation of a test mixture of 15 compounds of interest in high explosive analysis, including nitroguanidine, ethylene glycol dinitrate, diethylene glycol dinitrate, l,3,5-trinitro-l,3,5-triazacyclohexane (RDX), nitroglycerin, 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT), penta-erythritol tetranitrate, and picric acid, with excellent resolution except for the overlapping of 1,5- and 1,8-isomers of dinitronaphthalene. Also, separation of all the components (26) of the two sets of standards was attempted with extremely limited coelutions. [Pg.173]

In the analysis of nitroglycerine compounds, care should be taken to obtain a thoroughly well-mixed sample, as nitroglycerine may segregate. In sampling, the ends of cartridges should ht discarded. [Pg.442]

In some cases the analysis can be shortened (ammonites, chlorUites). A weighed quantity is digested with acetone which readily dissolves nitro-compounds, nitroglycerine and hydrocarboiu. The insoluble residue is further tested as above, the salts being extracted with water, and the insoluble residue examined for wood meal, charcoal, alununium, sUicides and mineral matter. [Pg.443]
