Nitrogen monoxid

Nitrogen Monoxid. Nitrous oxid—Laughing gas—Nitrogen-protoxid—NaO—Molecular weight=4A—8p. f/r.=1.527A—Fuses at —100° (—148° F.)—Boils at —87° (—134° F.)—Discovered in 1770 bg Priestley. [Pg.106]

Preparation. — By heating aniinonium nitrate (NHONOs = NaO + 2HaO. To obtain a pure product there should be no ammonium chlorid present (as an impurity of the nitrate), and the-heat should be applied gradually, and not allowed to exceed 250° (483° F.), and the gas formed slrould be passed through wash-bottles containing sodium hydroxid and ferrous sulfate. [Pg.106]

Properties,—Physical.—A colorless, odorless gas, having a-sweetish taste soluble in HsO more so in alcohol. Under a. pressure of 30 atmospheres, at 0° (38° F.), It forms a colorless, mobile liquid which, when dissolved in carbon disultid and evaporated in vacuo, produces a cold of —140° (— 220° F.). [Pg.106]

Chemical.—It is decomposed by a red heat and by the continuous passage of electric sparks. It is not combustible, but is, after oxygen, the best supporter of combustion known. [Pg.106]

A solution in w ater under pressure, containing five volumes of the gas, is sometimes used for intemail administration. [Pg.106]

The reduction of a nitrate, for example potassium nitrate, by iron(ll) sulphate in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid gives reasonably pure nitrogen monoxide. The mixture is warmed and at this temperature the nitrogen monoxide produced does not combine with uncharged iron(II) sulphate (see below). [Pg.230]

Industrially nitrogen monoxide is prepared by the catalytic oxidation of ammonia as an intermediate in the manufacture of nitric acid (p. 238). The molecule of nitrogen monoxide contains an odd number of electrons and can be represented as... [Pg.230]

Unlike nitrogen monoxide, nitrogen dioxide has properties more typical of an odd electron molecule. It is a coloured (brown), reactive gas which dimerises to the diamagnetic colourless gas dinitrogen tetroxide, N2O4. in which the odd electron is paired. The structure of dinitrogen tetroxide can be represented as a resonance hybrid of ... [Pg.231]

If this reaction takes place in air, the evolved nitrogen monoxide is oxidised to the dioxide and this dissolves again as in equation (9.1) hence virtually complete conversion of nitrogen dioxide to nitric acid can occur (see nitric acid, below). With alkalis, a mixture of nitrite and nitrate is formed ... [Pg.233]

Nitrogen monoxide ( nitnc oxide ) is another stable free radical Although known for hundreds of years NO has only recently been discovered to be an extremely important biochemical messenger and moderator of so many biological processes that it might be better to ask Which ones is it not involved m ... [Pg.167]

Our experience conditions us to focus on the organic components of the reaction—l arginine and l citrul line—and to give less attention to the inorganic one—nitric oxide (nitrogen monoxide NO) To do so however would lead us to overlook one of the most important discoveries in biology in the last quarter of the twentieth century... [Pg.1149]

The measurement of NO concentration is based on chemiluminescence this is light generation due to a chemical reaction. This occurs when nitrogen monoxide and ozone react with each other. [Pg.1301]

The device for nitrogen oxides based on chemiluminescence measures the nitrogen monoxide concentration. The same equipment can be used to measure the concentration of nitrogen dioxide. Nitrogen monoxide is used as an oxidizer in biproplnt systems with carbon monoxide or methanol-w as fuels, and it is added to N2O4 to advantageously modify the frp and bp of this oxidizer. It is also employed as a high enthalpy flow medium in hypersonic wind tunnels (Ref 10), and as an oxidizing gas in atomic absorption spectroscopy (Ref 12). Qf -19.7 kcal/mole (Ref 3)... [Pg.312]

Nitrogen monoxide, NO, has been found to act as a neurotransmitter. To prepare to study its effect, a sample was collected in a container of volume 250.0 mL. At 19.5°C, its pressure in this container is found to be 24.5 kPa. What amount (in moles) of NO has been collected ... [Pg.293]

NO. Nitric oxide, or nitrogen monoxide, is a colorless gas at room temperature. As we have already seen, it is industrially produced by the oxidation of ammonia. However, with respect to the urban envirorunent, a more significant process is the high temperature reaction of N2 with O2 (as in a car engine) to produce NO. [Pg.323]

The experimental results imply that the main reaction (eq. 1) is an equilibrium reaction and first order in nitrogen monoxide and iron chelate. The equilibrium constants at various temperatures were determined by modeling the experimental NO absorption profile using the penetration theory for mass transfer. Parameter estimation using well established numerical methods (Newton-Raphson) allowed detrxmination of the equilibrium constant (Fig. 1) as well as the ratio of the diffusion coefficients of Fe"(EDTA) andNO[3]. [Pg.794]
