Halide complexes are also well known but complexes with nitrogen-containing ligands are rare. An exception is the blue phthalocyanine complex formed by reaction of Be metal with phthalonitrile, 1,2-C6H4(CN)2, and this affords an unusual example of planar 4-coordinate Be (Fig. 5.5). The complex readily picks up two molecules of H2O to form an extremely stable dihydrate, perhaps by dislodging 2 adjacent Be-N bonds and forming 2 Be-O bonds at the preferred tetrahedral angle above and below the plane of the macrocycle.

In this article, special attention has been paid to cyclopropanations, Diels-Alder reactions, and nucleophilic substitutions, for which numerous works have been devoted to the use of Ar,N-containing ligands. Other classical reactions allowing the formation of a new C - C bond have been omitted here (e.g., Michael-type additions or aldol reactions) where they have also been, to a lesser extent, efficiently performed using nitrogen-containing ligands. 

Other anionic nitrogen-containing ligands which have been examined in the search for new non-metallocene catalysts include macrocyclic porphyrins and tetraazaannulenes. However, activities with these catalysts are low.

A number of observations show the profound effect of chelation on the stability of Schiff bases and similar unsaturated nitrogen-containing ligands. Eichhorn and coworkers found that the Schiff base of bis(thiaphenal)ethylene-diimine is hydrolyzed in the presence of Cu+2, with the formation of the ethylene-diamine complex (Equation 18) (26, 28). 

It is well known that nitrogen-containing ligands are readily metallated by paHadium(II). The first reaction of this type was described in 1965 by Cope et al.1 for azobenzene. Nitrogen-containing ligands are the most effective systems to stabilize nickel(III) and nickel(IV). The most studied complexes are those formed with macrocyclic ligands.
