An alternative approach having the potential to considerably increase energy densities is making use of several oxidation or reduction steps so that more than one electron can be transferred by an active electrode element. This is possible by solid-state conversion reactions in reactive nanocomposites based on metal nitrides, metal chalkogenides, or metal fluorides. [Pg.52]

Main-group elements X such as monovalent F, divalent O, and trivalent N are expected to form families of transition-metal compounds MX (M—F fluorides, M=0 oxides, M=N nitrides) that are analogous to the corresponding p-block compounds. In this section we wish to compare the geometries and NBO descriptors of transition-metal halides, oxides, and nitrides briefly with the isovalent hydrocarbon species (that is, we compare fluorides with hydrides or alkyls, oxides with alkylidenes, and nitrides with alkylidynes). However, these substitutions also bring in other important electronic variations whose effects will now be considered. [Pg.421]

The main emphasis was laid, in this initial work, on Haber s catalysts, e.g., osmium and uranium compounds, as well as on a series of iron catalysts. Some other metals and their compounds which we tested are, as we know today, less accessibble to an activation by added substances than iron. Therefore, they showed no improvement or only small positive effects if used in the form of multicomponent catalysts. Finally, the substances which we added to the metal catalysts in this early stage of our work were mostly of the same type as those which had proved to favor the nitride formation, e.g., the flux promoting chlorides, sulfates, and fluorides of the alkali and alkaline earth metals. Again, we know today that just these compounds do not promote, but rather impair the activity of ammonia catalysts. [Pg.88]

The metals also present an additional problem in that the product oxide, fluoride, or nitride species may be a solid phase at the combustion temperature or condense during expansion through the rocket nozzle. Figure 2 presents a graphical comparison of the phase properties of the... [Pg.326]
