The NO spectrum has now been studied for the molecule adsorbed on ZnO, ZnS (18), 7-AI2O3, silica-alumina, silica-magnesia (20), an A-type zeolite (97), H-mordenite (98), and a variety of Y-type zeolites including NaY (19), MgY, CaY, BaY, SrY (81), decationated-Y (19), ScY, LaY, and A1HY (99). The nitric oxide molecule has mainly been used as a... [Pg.307]

At temperatures near 100° Horiguchi and associates (117) have shown that CO reacts with the superoxide ion on ZnO, but the Or spectrum remained at a fixed level following the addition of a mixture of CO and 02. Hydrogen did not react with 02- at that temperature. Upon addition of nitric oxide at room temperature the Oi signal instantaneously disappeared. [Pg.314]

It has been shown that lung macrophages from patients with systemic sclerosis (SS) produced the elevated levels of nitric oxide, superoxide, and peroxynitrite and expressed the enhanced level of iNOS [281], NAC administration reduced peroxynitrite production and might be possibly recommended for the treatment SS patients. Solans et al. [282] found the significant enhancement of lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes from SS patients. Cracowski et al. [283] showed that in vivo lipid peroxidation was enhanced in scleroderma spectrum disorders including SS and undifferentiated connective tissue disease. [Pg.935]

Patients with acute chest syndrome should receive incentive spirometry appropriate fluid therapy broad-spectrum antibiotics including a mac-rolide or quinolone and, for hypoxia or acute distress, oxygen therapy. Steroids and nitric oxide are being evaluated. [Pg.388]

The nitrosyldioxyl radical has largely been ignored in the chemical literature because it is relatively unstable in air. Nitrosyldioxyl radical is approximately 4.8 kcal/mol less stable than nitric oxide and oxygen in the gas phase less than 0.1% of the nitric oxide will combine with oxygen under standard conditions in the gas phase. Although present in low concentrations, the infrared spectrum of nitrosyldioxyl radical has been reported in the gas phase (Guillory and Johnston, 1965) and ab initio quantum mechanics calculations have been performed (Boehm and Lohr, 1989). [Pg.14]

The UV spectrum of nitrite at acidic pH is unusual. Nitrite at neutral to alkaline pH has a single peak at 356 nm, which is converted to a series of multiple peaks at acidic pH (Fig. 15). Normally, a UV peak is broadened by a combination of vibrational and more closely spaced rotational quantum states. However, light in the near UV region can separate nitrous acid into hydroxyl radical and nitric oxide. [Pg.28]

Nearly all cells express kinin receptors that mediate the activities of both bradykinin and kallidin. The activation of these G-protein coupled receptors causes relaxation of venular smooth muscle and hypotension, increased vascular permeability, contraction of smooth muscle of the gut and airway leading to increased airway resistance, stimulation of sensory neurons, alteration of ion secretion of epithelial cells, production of nitric oxide, release of cytokines from leukocytes, and the production of eicosanoids from various cell types [11,12]. Because of this broad spectrum of activity, kinins have been implicated as an important mediator in many pathophysiologies including pain, sepsis, asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, pancreatitis, and a wide variety of other inflammatory diseases. Moreover, a recent report demonstrated that bradykinin B2 receptors on the surface of human fibroblasts were upregulated three-fold beyond normal in patients with Alzheimer s disease, implicating bradykinin as a participant in the peripheral inflammatory processes associated with that disease [13]. [Pg.121]

CIO and BrO abundances are detected simultaneously and continuously as the airstream passes through the instrument. They are not detected directly but are chemically converted to Cl and Br atoms by reaction with reagent nitric oxide gas that is added to the airstream inside the instrument. The Cl and Br atoms are then detected directly with resonance fluorescence in the 2D5/2 -> 2P3/2 transitions in the vacuum ultraviolet region of the spectrum. In resonance fluorescence, the emissions from the light sources are resonantly scattered off of the Cl and Br atoms in the airstream and are detected by a photomultiplier tube set at right angles to both the light source and the flow tube. The chemical conversion reactions... [Pg.180]

Clyne, Thrush, and Wayne107 reexamined the chemiluminescence from the nitric oxide-ozone reaction and found its spectrum to be similar to that of the thermal emission of N02 at 1200°K. They concluded that the spectra represented transitions from similar low-lying vibration levels of the same excited electronic state of NOa to the ground state. By measuring the decay in chemiluminescence down a flow tube, they obtained the value of the rate constant between 216 and 322°K. The partial pressures of ozone and nitric oxide were 5 x 10-3 and 2 x 10 2 torr, respectively, in an argon carrier at a total pressure of 2 torr. In the presence of excess nitric oxide, they assumed the logarithmic disappearance of ozone proportional to [NO], so that... [Pg.224]

Other aspects of the report (42) on [Fe3S2(NO)5] are surprising. Elemental analysis of the ammonium salt was reported to distinguish between iron(II) and iron(III) in [Fe3S2(NO)5] , but to find these two types of iron present in equal numbers is most unusual for a triiron complex. Second, the molecular weight of the potassium salt was measured as 420 by mass spectrometry. This value is close to the M/Z of 421 calculated for the most abundant isotopic form of the ion-pair cation [KFe3S2(NO)5] +. Finally, the ESR spectrum reported is that of a dini-trosyliron species, which bears a remarkable resemblance to that reported (22) for a complex formed from Fe(II) and nitric oxide in aqueous alkaline solution. [Pg.345]

In order to study the photochemical action of solar radiation on tropospheric, stratospheric, and mesospheric constituents, the solar spectrum must be divided in various ranges.1 The radiation at wavelengths less than 100 nm, which is absorbed by nitrogen and oxygen in the thermosphere above 100 km, leads essentially to ionization processes and is, therefore, not considered there. Only X-rays of wavelengths less than 1 nm can penetrate into the atmosphere below 100 km, and lead indirectly to the dissociation of molecular constituents. Nevertheless, their principal role is the photoionization in the D region of the ionosphere below 100 km where the solar line Lyman-a at 121.6 nm ionizes the nitric oxide molecule, NO. [Pg.64]
