Nitric constitutive

Add 1 drop (0 05 ml.) of concentrated nitric acid to 2 0 ml. of a 0 5 per cent, aqueous solution of paraperiodic acid (HjIO,) contained in a small test-tube and shake well. Then introduce 1 op or a small crystal of the compound. Shake the mixture for 15 seconds and add 1-2 drops of 5 per cent, aqueous silver nitrate. The immediate production of a white precipitate (silver iodate) constitutes a positive test and indicates that the organic compound has been oxidised by the periodic acid. The test is based upon the fact that silver iodate is sparingly soluble in dilute nitric acid whereas silver periodate is very soluble if too much nitric acid is present, the silver iodate will not precipitate. [Pg.447]

Place 2 ml. of the periodic acid reagent in a small test tube, add one drop (no more—otherwise the silver iodate, if formed, will fail to precipitate) of concentrated nitric acid, and shake well. Add one drop or a small crystal of the compound to be tested, shake the mixture for 15-20 seconds, and then add 1-2 drops of 3 per cent, silver nitrate solution. The instantaneous formation of a white precipitate of silver iodate is a positive test. Failure to form a precipitate, or the appearance of a brown precipitate which redissolves on shaking, constitutes a negative test. [Pg.1070]

Constitution. Hydrastine contains two methoxyl groups and a methylenedioxy-group, and behaves as a tertiary base. The first insight into the inner structure of the base was obtained when Freund and Will showed that with dilute nitric acid it undergoes hydrolytic oxidation, yielding opianic acid and a new base hydrastinine, CiiHigOgN. This reaction is analogous with the similar hydrolytic oxidation of narcotine (p. 201) to opianic acid and cotarnine and hydrastinine is allied to cotarnine and can be prepared from it. [Pg.163]

Oxyberberine, C2oHj,05N, This, the first product of the action of potassium permanganate on berberine, crystallises from xylene in plates, m.p. 198-200°. When even traces are dissolved in 50 per cent, sulphuric acid and a drop of nitric acid is added, a brown colour is produced, changing to intense violet. The constitution of oxyberberine is discussed below. From the results of these and other reactions, Perkin assigned a formula to berberine, which was modified by Perkin and Robinson to(V). [Pg.332]

Mercury fulminate has the formula Hg(ONC)2. It was probably discovered by Howard in 1800 and its constitution was established by Nef. The method of preparation is known as the Chandelon process and is a complex reaction studied by Wieland. Mercury is dissolved in an excess of warm nitric acid and ethyl alcohol added to the resulting solution. Considerable bubbling occurs in the strong reaction, so this is usually carried out in capacious glass balloons .
