Kambara and Nishimura studied the hydrogenation of the methyl esters of o-, m-, and p-methoxybenzoic acid over platinum group metals in f-butyl alcohol at 60°C and atmospheric hydrogen pressure.197 As seen from the results shown in Table 11.15, hydrogenolysis occurred most extensively over platinum and iridium and much less extensively over rhodium and ruthenium, especially with the meta and para isomers. It is noted that the ortho isomer was hydrogenolyzed as extensively as the meta isomer over platinum and iridium, and much more extensively than the meta and para isomers over rhodium and ruthenium. Over Pd-C the most extensively hydrogenolyzed was the meta isomer. One of the reasons for the extensive hydrogenolysis in the case of the ortho isomer can be attributed to the direct formation of methyl benzoate, which amounted to 17.1% over rhodium, 20.7% over ruthenium, and 16.6% over platinum,... [Pg.457]

Nakahara and Nishimura studied the selectivities of copper-chromium oxides, nickel, palladium, rhodium, and ruthenium catalysts in the hydrogenation of phenan-threne, 9,10-dihydrophenanthrene (DHP), and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydrophenanthrene (THP), usually in cyclohexane at 80°C (150°C for copper-chromium oxide) and an initial hydrogen pressure of 11 MPa (5 MPa for platinum metals). The hydrogenations over Os-C, Ir-C, and Pt-C were very slow and not investigated further. The varying compositions of the reaction mixture versus reaction time have been analyzed on the basis of the reaction sequences shown in Scheme 11.20 by means of a computer simulation, assuming the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism.262 The results are summarized in Table 11.23. [Pg.479]

Nishimura and coworkers57-59 studied the y-radiolysis of aqueous solutions of sulfoxide amino acids. Sulfoxide amino acids are the precursors of the flavors of onions (S-propyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide, S-methyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide and S-(l-propenyl)-L-cysteine sulfoxide) and garlic (S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide). In studies on sprout inhibition of onion by /-irradiation it was found that the characteristic flavor of onions became milder. In the y-radiolysis of an aqueous solution of S-propyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (PCSO)57,58 they identified as the main products alanine, cysteic acid, dipropyl disulfide and dipropyl sulfide. In the radiolysis of S-allyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide (ACSO) they found that the main products are S-allyl-L-cysteine, cysteic acid, cystine, allyl alcohol, propyl allyl sulfide and diallyl sulfide. The mechanisms of formation of the products were partly elucidated by the study of the radiolysis in the presence of N20 and Br- as eaq - and OH radicals scavengers, respectively. [Pg.909]

The presence of methylenic bands shifted at higher frequency in the very early stages of the polymerization reaction has also been reported by Nishimura and Thomas [114]. A few years later, Spoto et al. [30,77] reported an ethylene polymerization study on a Cr/silicalite, the aluminum-free ZSM-5 molecular sieve. This system is characterized by localized nests of hydroxyls [26,27,115], which can act as grafting centers for chromium ions, thus showing a definite propensity for the formation of mononuclear chromium species. In these samples two types of chromium are present those located in the internal nests and those located on the external surface. Besides the doublet at 2920-2850 cm two additional broad bands at 2931 and 2860 cm are observed. Even in this favorable case no evidence of CH3 groups was obtained [30,77]. The first doublet is assigned to the CH2 stretching mode of the chains formed on the external surface of the zeolite. The bands at 2931 and... [Pg.23]

Hydration of polymeric membranes may be influenced by the chemical identity of the polymers. A hydrophilic polymer has a higher potential to hydrate than a hydrophobic one. Sefton and Nishimura [56] studied the diffusive permeability of insulin in polyhydroxyethyl methacrylate (37.1% water), polyhydroxy-ethyl acrylate (51.8% water), polymethacrylic acid (67.5% water), and cupro-phane PT-150 membranes. They found that insulin diffusivity through polyacrylate membrane was directly related to the weight fraction of water in the membrane system under investigation (Fig. 17). [Pg.612]

In early studies, the criterion for pheromonal activity was designated as the lowest concentration (ppm) of the candidate compound in a 10-fold dilution series that elicited a demonstrable response from test mites. Activity was expressed in terms of the dose of the test compound applied to the filter paper dispenser. More recently, more sophisticated bioassays using arenas have been developed, in which the movements of mites toward or away from test stimuli can be quantified (Nishimura et al., 2002). [Pg.90]

An extracellular RNase of Bacillus subtilis strain H was isolated in crystalline state and its chemical nature studied by Nishimura and coworkers (112). It has a very complicated base specificity (113, 114)-However, with a few exceptions, the phosphodiester bonds of 3 -purine nucleotides are cleaved faster than those of 3 -pyrimidine nucleotides, and those of 3 -nucleotides with 6(4)-keto group are cleaved faster than those of 3 -nucleotides with a 6(4)-amino group. Thus, when adjacent bonds are the same, the following results ... [Pg.239]
